A great way to start learning about the seven chakras and auras. I only gave four stars because of some tedious and highly distracting editing issues, but content wise, a great read.

Restrained and dignified look at a family?s troubled history
By Mary Whipple
Winner of 1987's Pulitzer Prize, this genteel and very old-fashioned tale of a troubled family is more in the tradition of Eudora Welty than that of Jonathan Franzen. Filtering the whole story through the eyes of Philip Carver, a collector of antique books in his late 40's, the author startles the reader by making no effort whatsoever to involve him vicariously in the action, something we now take for granted in modern fiction. Instead, he requires the reader to get to know Philip through his first-person narrative, draw conclusions about his background, and observe how unfolding events change his perceptions, not only about present actions, but of the past, as well.

Philip is, at heart, very much a southern gentleman, despite the fact that he thinks he has escaped his Nashville and Memphis heritage for New York, where he has lived for almost fifteen years, unmarried, with Holly Kaplan. Despite the painful relationship he has had with his autocratic but reserved father, now in his eighties, he responds to a series of phone calls from his unmarried sisters and returns to Memphis, where his father is planning to remarry, an eventuality which the sisters find anathema and which they are determined to countervail.

Both the immediate situation in Memphis and the history leading up to it are told in the past tense, with flashbacks to still earlier times, a rare and difficult narrative approach which keeps the reader at arm's length, but Taylor manages to give emotional power to unfolding events, in part, because Philip's narrative restraint contrasts so sharply with the meanness and manipulation of his "well-meaning" father and, now, his sisters. The irony grows as the reader sees parallels between the present circumstances of the father, his fiance, and the sisters, and events which happened many years ago. The tables have been turned, but Philip exhibits no sense of victory, no gloating, only growing self-awareness and understanding. He remains a gentleman to the very end in this most unusual and enlightening novel. Mary Whipple

Very restrained, yet emotionally intense story of a family
By AusE
Peter Taylor, a native Tennessean, won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction with this story in 1987. That, together with my residence in Nashville, was enough to recommend it to me.

The story is narrated by Phillip Carver, a fiftyish man who grew up in Nashville and Memphis in a prosperous and well-known family. The patriarchal head of the family, George Carver, had a thriving legal practice in Nashville before moving his entire family to Memphis after being involved in a business scandal with a prominent business partner. This story is about the ramifications that move had upon Carver's children, now middle aged and unmarried - Phillip and his two sisters, Betsy and Josephine. Their lives, all successful in their own ways, have been driven by an abiding resentment towards their father, and the father, in turn, directed their lives in ways that would appear devious and pernicious, including despoiling marriage plans for each one. Phillip had made flight to New York some fifteen years prior to the time period described here (which I calculated to be in the mid-1960's). The narrator, his father, now in his early eighties, and his two sisters, all carry immense emotional baggage towards one another. But it is of a type of baggage that is never given overt voice, lying buried beneath a veneer of politeness and rectitude. Indeed, the narrator conveys deep-seated emotional memories with a kind of dispassionate elan, if that is possible; he feels a step removed from the events of his life, and his feelings towards his sisters and father are unresolved, even under-developed. Indeed, he never quite resolves his feelings towards them, but dutifully returns to Memphis frequently over the course of the story at the behest of his sisters, who have engaged in a lifelong obsession over their father and his affairs. Phillip does receive some revelation on these matters towards the end and sees his family members as they perhaps really were and are.

In some ways, very little happens in this story. I had a sense of wanting the writer to break out and really tell a story. The narrator's emotional aloofness serves to prevent this. Eventually, the story does take off, but it takes some time. The writing is very subtle, and Taylor does have a knack for understatement. But perhaps he was more of a short story writer, as his resume suggests - I did enjoy this book, especially the insights into the lives of the cultural elite in regions that I am very familiar with, but am ambivalent about its being awarded the highest literary prize. Maybe on reflection I will change this view, but for now, I am a little untouched by this work.

Fabulously written
By Shannon Byrd
Peter Taylor writes in a way that makes every moment enjoyable and worth remembering. The story of the lives of the members of the Carver family and the profound effect a move from Nashville to Memphis has on them is unforgettable. By the novel's end the reader is left with so much to consider, from the relationships of the characters to their motivations and eventual lifestyles. And unlike one of the last books I read, Philip Roth's American Pastoral, which also chronicled the life of an American family, Taylor's book is beautifully written but yet simple and clear - no egotistical self-loving prose here! I would actually plan on reading some of Taylor's other works, this was so enjoyable. You won't forget this one.

Coming of Age (Crown in Conflict Series Book 2), by Jan Foxall

With his duchy of Normandy still sporadically in revolt, William the Bastard’s work at achieving supremacy there is hard and his efforts must be relentless. In addition to this he also knows that he must look towards the future, and he realises that without a wife and family the future will be bleak. He needs an heir. But William is also painfully aware that his bastardy is not a recommendation to any potential wife, so for him there are even more mountains to climb.

In England, Harold has chosen his own partner and is preparing to share his life with her. King Edward continues in his hostility towards the most powerful of his magnates, Earl Godwine of Wessex, and the favours he dispenses to Godwine and his sons are, in the king’s mind, quite temporary. When an opportunity presents itself to dislodge Godwine from his position of eminence then Edward is unable to resist taking it. However, it soon becomes clear that the earl of Wessex is more resilient than Edward had expected.

This historical novel is the second book in the series 'Crown in Conflict'. It is set between the years 1047-1053.

Wonderful read!
By Kathleen Ingram
"‘Crown in Conflict’ is a series of six novels telling the story of the ruling houses of England and Normandy over a period of half a century before and after the Norman Conquest. This historical novel covers events between 1035 to 1047. " BE STILL,My heart!.. I cannot wait..

Often I say I wish the book would not end and this time was not an exception. It was superb and a very fine read. The history was accurate and period detail right on as well. I really admire Jan Foxall as a writer.

I truly felt at times that I was in the same room as the and feeling their emotion. If I had to say why, it must have been the character development as well as the author's great perspective on these people in this time.

I recommend this series as well as her series on John Plantagenet. Foxall indicates that these are her own perspectives but this one is so on target and John is very good also. The Arthur series has not yet gripped me in the same way but I think that Jan Foxall is a terrific author.

Constructing Tradition: Means and Myths of Transmission in Western Esotericism (Aries Book), by Andreas Kilcher

The question of constructing tradition, concepts of origin, and memory as well as techniques and practices of knowledge transmission, are central for cultures in general. In esotericism, however, such questions and techniques play an outstanding role and are widely reflected upon, in its literature. Esoteric paradigms not only understand themselves in elaborated mytho-poetical narratives as bearers of older, hidden, higher knowledge. They also claim their knowledge to be of a particular origin. And they claim this knowledge has been transmitted by particular (esoteric) means, media and groups. Consequently, esotericism not only involves the construction of its own tradition; it can even be understood as a specific form of tradition and transmission. The various studies of the present voume, which contains the papers of a conference held in Tubingen in July 2007, provide an overview of the most important concepts and ways of constructing tradition in esotericism."

excerpt: The question of constructing tradition, concepts of origin and memory as well as techniques and practices of knowledge transmission are central for culture in general. In esotericism and its literature, however, such questions and techniques play an outstanding role and are widely reflected upon. Esoteric paradigms not only understand themselves in elaborate mytho-poetical narratives as bearers of "older", "hidden", "higher" knowledge. They also claim their knowledge to be of a particular origin. And they claim this knowledge has been transmitted by particular (esoteric) means, media and groups. Consequently, esotericism not only involves the construction of its own tradition; it can even be understood as a specific form of tradition and transmission.
This was precisely the topic of the inaugural conference of the Euro-pean Society for the Study of Western Esotericism (ESSWE), which took place in Tbingen between the 19th and the 22nd of July 2007 under the title Constructing Tradition. Means and Myths of Trans-mission in Western Esotericism. / Die Konstruktion von Tradition. Praktiken und Mythen der berlieferung in der europischen Esoterik. The present volume contains a selection of the papers held at this conference.
The topic of this conference and of the present volume needs to be explained more accurately: in the construction of their own traditions, both pre-modern and modern esoteric paradigms-including magic, alchemy, Kabbalah as well as occultism and theosophy-claim to represent or restore an ancient, primordial wisdom tradition as a kind of "secret knowledge". The conceptualisation and realisation of such claims places a major emphasis on ideas of tradition, passed on either by oral transmission or by the discovery and dissemination of mythic or absolute books. In this sense, the questions of heritage and tradition, of origin and genealogy are crucial to the foundation of any esoteric knowledge. It defines, and moreover legitimates itself, through its origins, its ancestry, and its means of esoteric transmission. In so doing, esotericism seeks to invent its own tradition, to map its master narratives, to construct its myths of origin and its myths of transmission.
An example may provide a more concrete understanding of this phenomenon: Romeyn de Hooghe's Hieroglyphica of Merkbeelden der Oude Volkeren (1735), or in the German translation Hieroglyphica oder Denkbilder der alten Vlker (1744). A well-known engraver of the late Dutch Baroque period, de Hooghe was by no means an esotericist himself, but nevertheless described and represented esoteric understandings of tradition. Through the numerous copperplate engravings of this remarkable book, he actually wanted to help writers and artists to form an appropriate picture of the ancient cultures and their now forgotten emblems or Merkbeelden ('Denkbilder, literally thought pictures), which he depicts as "hieroglyphs", as cryptic, mysterious and enigmatic pictorial characters. He thus understands cultural history as the accumulation of signs from different spheres and eras, which throughout the course of history became less and less comprehensible, more and more emblematic and mysterious. Consequently, the historical differences between different cultures collapse in these `Denkbilder', as they mingle in syncretistic amalgams transgressing the boundaries of distinct traditions, religions and languages. What de Hooghe therefore shows is the transition from one religion to another ('den Uebergang bei einen Religion zu der andern'). Based on this understanding, the book supplies its readers with pictures of hybrid spaces. It is in some sense a museum of heterogeneous Delphic objects and figures. Culture, for de Hooghe, seems to be a practice of engraving and decoding old signs. This leads to the ars hieroglyphica, which he explains as the art of making pictorial languages ('Die Kunst, Bildersprache zu machen'), as well as to a scientia hieroglyphica, which he explains as the science of understanding pictorial languages ('die Wissenschaft, dieselben zu verstehen'). In this way de Hooghe divides the cultures of antiquity into a variety of hieroglyphic arts and sciences, such as
Sapientia Memphitica, the Memphitic wisdom. Symbola Aegyptiaca, Egyptian symbols, Emblemata Thebaica, Theban emblems, Allegoriae Chaldaicae, Chaldean allegories, Mysteria Insculpta, graven mysteries. Imagines Thebaicae, Theban images.Typi Phoenici, Phoenician archetypes,Icones Absconsae Sapientiae, images of hidden wisdom.'One of these emblematic `Denkbilder'--which 'give little to the eye but nevertheless say a great deal in meaningful pictures' ('da sie weniger zu sehen geben, und doch in Sinnbildern vieles sagen')--portrays the founding of these artes hieroglyphicae in the biblical Orient. Among these types of esoteric writers he depicts the 'Chaldean magus, who engraves the elements in the pyramid' (letter D), which lies, as de Hooghe explains, in darkness to stress that these magical matters are barely comprehensible. As a similar type, he depicts Seth, the third son of Adam (after Cain and Abel), who is engraving on two pillars the history as well as the primordial knowledge given to Adam by God (letter A). De Hooghe gives the following explanation (subscriptio) for this section of the emblem (pictura):
Here in the distance there appear two round pillars [ ...], all around which in the whitewashed clay the patriarch Seth engraved and etched in emblems the facts concerning him, his father, his mother and his brothers, and presumably [.. .] this God-fearing teacher bequeathed them for his descendants, along with the foundations and laws of a certain divine service.
This reading of the "oriental" emblem is obviously poised to construct an esoteric tradition. Indeed, in esoteric discourse, Seth--like Adam before him and Enoch after him--is known as one of the biblical founding fathers of a tradition of hidden knowledge. He plays this role not only in Jewish magical literature and the Kabbalah but also in a specific Sethian literature associated with Gnosticism and Manichaeism. In this context Seth belongs (as shith-il) to the divine sphere; he turns into a powerful embodiment of the divine nous, a revealer and saviour, teaching a doctrine of intermixture and confusion. In this role, the biblical Seth seems to be fused (as he is in the Coptic magical texts) with the homonymous Egyptian god Seth and is thereby turned into a pantheistic Godhead of the world. Some of the Gnostic texts of the Nag Hammadi library are attributed to this type of Seth: for example, the Three Steles of Seth, which report what Seth inscribed as primordial and hidden knowledge on the pillars; or the Gospel of the Egyptians, a book supposedly written by Seth, who hid it in the mountain "Charaxio"--it is said that the book will be revealed at the end of time. Thus, when Hooghe shows Seth as a hieroglyphic engraver (obviously also mirroring his own work), he refers subtextually to an esoteric tradition of biblical antiquity, even suggesting a possible Egyptian foundation for Seth's esoteric knowledge. This mythopoetic invention of tradition is typical of esotericism.
Naturally, the esoteric construction of tradition needs to be described not only by examples, but also systematically. Indeed, many esoteric paradigms of early modern and modern times claim to represent or restore an ancient, primordial or lost secret wisdom. Precisely these claims place a major emphasis on processes of tradition and trans-mission, whether based on orality or the dissemination of sacred and mythic books. Thus, questions of heritage and tradition, of origin and genealogy, are crucial to the foundation of any esoteric knowledge.
In the construction of tradition, a differentiation can be made between concepts and myths on the one hand and the history and means of transmission on the other. The former refers to the more mythical or philosophical aspects of tradition, the latter to its technical, material and historical aspects. The investigation of these aspects brings together various methodological approaches and perspectives that compare the traditions of esoteric knowledge with corresponding concepts and practices in religion, literature or science. Indeed, the question of how esoteric knowledge may be examined either via its concepts or myths within the literature of a given tradition itself, or via the actual historical and sociological practice of esoteric groups in bequeathing their knowledge to posterity. Accordingly, one can distinguish between a) concepts, b) myths, and c) the historical practices and procedures of transmission in esotericism.
a) Theoretical and interpretational frameworks (concepts and ideas of tradition) The many varied concepts of tradition in esotericism imply theories of esoteric communication and information, involving the construction and conception of genealogies and the transmission of such primordial and secret knowledge. These theories may be investigated from various points of view (which may also find a place within non-esoteric concepts of knowledge), through the philosophy and/or theology of history, but also through media or information theory. Consequently, the following aspects may be taken into consideration:philosophy of history (concepts of tradition and transmission)theology of history (soteriological and messianic expectations of restoration; hidden or lost traditions)media concepts (oral and literary transmission and communication as well as imagery, symbolism and any visual communication and "iconic action")b) Mythical and literary approaches (myths and imagined tradition) A second field may be distinguished by mythical and literary, i.e. less conceptual, more imaginative framings of tradition and transmission in esotericism. Ultimately quite distinct from actual historical reality, transmission can be the object of mythical construction as well as literary narration. Moreover, esoteric models of transmission might some-times be viewed as generators of literary and mythical narration. The following aspects may be considered:mythical agents and bearers of esoteric tradition inside and out-side the biblical framework (Adam, Seth, Moses, Zoroaster, Hermes Trismegistus)myths of origin, genealogy, transmissionliterary narratives of esoteric tradition and transmissionc) Historical approaches (practices and procedures of transmission) The actual historical practice of transmission can differ widely from the theoretical construction and the imaginative plane of mythical invention. Sociology, communication and media studies, history and related disciplines have developed instruments of analysis that are fruitful in exploring practices of transmission. In order to understand processes of group formation, projects in translation and criticism, or the function of oral, literary and visual traditions, the following aspects seem worth considering:sociology: groups, circles, (secret) societiespolitics: religious and confessional strategiesdoctrine: master-disciple relationships versus direct inspirationmedia: oral, literary, image, symbolismphilology: projects in translation, criticism, editionslibrary and museum: books, collectionsThe present volume does not follow this systematic description of possible perspectives in an encyclopaedic manner. As it is not a handbook of esotericism but a conference volume, it participates in this field through a combination of general and exemplary studies, always following the theme of constructing tradition in esotericism. In this combination of general and exemplary analysis, the papers in this volume can be classified into three sections.
The first section analyses the "master narratives of tradition" in esotericism, firstly in systematic studies, then also in historical studies. What is at stake here is the theoretical and mythical construction, the invention and narration of tradition in esotericism from medieval times to modernity (see the papers by Andreas B. Kilcher, Antoine Faivre, Matthias Heiduk, Philipp Theisohn, Wouter Hanegraaff, Nicholas Goodrick-Clark, Tim Rudbg, Monika Neugebauer-Wolk and Kocku von Stuckrad). The second section discusses the central topic of constructing tradition with reference to a significant example: Kabbalah. Indeed, Kabbalah--literally meaning "reception" of tradition--is a central example for the question of constructing tradition, as it not only involves specific practices of transmission, but also reflects explicitly on concepts and models of tradition (see the papers by Moshe Idel, Giulio Busi, Jean-Pierre Brach and Konstantin Burmistrov). A third section focuses on myths of origin in esotericism. As the construction of tradition generally has a vector in the past, it focuses specifically on the question of origins, placing in view the founding of this tradition by relating narratives of origin ("Ursprungsgeschichten"). Egypt, India, Islamic Sufism are examples of such narratives of origin, which are discussed in the con-tributions by Wilhelm Schmidt-Biggemann, Jan Assmann, Christine Maillard, Mark Sedgwick, Joscelyn Godwin and Bernd Roling.

About the Author

MARY POPPENDIECK, Managing Director of the Agile Alliance (a leading non profit organization promoting agile software development), is a seasoned leader in both operations and new product development with more than 25 years of IT experience. She has led teams implementing solutions ranging from enterprise supply chain management to digital media, and built one of 3M's first Just-in-Time lean production systems. Mary is currently the President of Poppendieck LLC, a consulting firm specializing in bringing lean production techniques to software development.

TOM POPPENDIECK was creating systems to support concurrent development of commercial airliner navigation devices as early as 1985. Even then, the aerospace industry recognized that sequential development of product design, manufacturing process design and product support was costly and non-competitive. His subsequent experience in software product development, COTS implementation, and most recently as a coach, mentor, and enterprise architect support the same conclusion for software development. He currently assists organizations that need to improve their software development capabilities apply the lean principles and tools described in this book.

Preface

I used to be a really good programmer. My code controlled telephone switching systems, high energy physics research, concept vehicles, and the makers and coaters used to manufacture 3M tape. I was equally good at writing Fortran or assembly language, and I could specify and build a minicomputer control system as fast as anyone. After a dozen or so years of programming, I followed one of my systems to a manufacturing plant and took the leap into IT management. I learned about materials control and unit costs and production databases. Then the quality-is-free and just-intime movements hit our plant, and I learned how a few simple ideas and empowered people could change everything.

A few years later I landed in new product development, leading commercialization teams for embedded software, imaging systems, and eventually optical systems. I liked new product development so much that I joined a start-up company and later started my own company to work with product development teams, particularly those doing software development.

I had been out of the software development industry for a half dozen years, and I was appalled at what I found when I returned. Between PMI (Project Management Institute) and CMM (Capability Maturity Model) certification programs, a heavy emphasis on process definition and detailed, front-end planning seemed to dominate everyone's perception of best practices. Worse, the justification for these approaches was the lean manufacturing movement I knew so well. I was keenly aware that the success of lean manufacturing rested on a deep understanding of what creates value, why rapid flow is essential, and how to release the brainpower of the people doing the work. In the prevailing focus on process and planning I detected a devaluation of these key principles. I heard, for example, that detailed process definitions were needed so that "anyone can program," while lean manufacturing focused on building skill in frontline people and having them define their own processes.

I heard that spending a lot of time and getting the requirements right upfront was the way to do things "right the first time." I found this curious. I knew that the only way that my code would work the first time I tried to control a machine was to build a complete simulation program and test the code to death. I knew that every product that was delivered to our plant came with a complete set of tests, and "right the first time" meant passing each test every step of the way. You could be sure that next month a new gizmo or tape length would be needed by marketing, so the idea of freezing a product configuration before manufacturing was simply unheard of. That's why we had serial numbers--so we could tell what the current manufacturing spec was the day a product was made. We would never expect to be making the exact same products this month that we were making last month.

Detailed front-end planning strikes me as diametrically opposed to lean manufacturing principles. Process definition by a staff group strikes me as diametrically opposed to the empowerment that is core to successful lean manufacturing. It seems to me that the manufacturing metaphor has been misapplied to software development. It seems to me that CMM, in its eagerness to standardize process, leaves out the heart of discovery and innovation that was the critical success factor in our move to total quality management. We knew in manufacturing that ISO9000 and even Malcolm Baldrige awards had little or nothing to do with a successful quality program. They were useful in documenting success, but generally got in the way of creating it. It seems to me that a PMI certification program teaches a new project manager several antipatterns for software project management. Work breakdown. Scope control.

Change control. Earned value. Requirements tracking. Time tracking. I learned all about these when I was a program manager for government contracts at 3M, and was keenly aware of the waste they added to a program. We certainly knew better than to use them on our internal product development programs, where learning and innovation were the essential ingredients of success.

This is not to say that CMM and PMI are bad, but only that for anyone who has lived through the lean revolution, they tend to give the wrong flavor to a software development program. In this book we hope to change the software development paradigm from process to people, from disaggregation to aggregation, from speculation to data-based decision making, from planning to learning, from traceability to testing, from cost-and-schedule control to delivering business value. If you think that better, cheaper, and faster can't coexist, you should know that we used to think the same way in the pre-lean days of manufacturing and product development. However, we learned that by focusing on value, flow, and people, you got better quality, lower cost, and faster delivery. We learned that from our competitors as they took away our markets. May you lead your industry in lean software development.

Excellent book that teaches how to think agilely
By Michael Cohn
Books written during the first phase of agile software development have been about very specific practices we should employ. There are some excellent books on the Extreme Programming, Feature-Driven Development and Scrum agile processes. These books teach us "do a, b, and c if you want to do Extreme Programming" or "do x, y and z if you want to do Scrum."
In the last year we've seen books by Highsmith (Agile Software Development Ecosystems) and Cockburn (Agile Software Development) that represent the second wave of agile software development-that of learning to think agilely rather than following a prescribed set of agile rules. Mary and Tom Poppendieck's book is the latest and best book for teaching how to think agilely.
The book contains 22 "thinking tools." The thinking tools are drawn from the world of lean manufacturing where they have helped improve product delivery speed, quality and cost. Each tool is presented as a guideline. Each thinking tool is described with enough detail that you can put it into practice; but, more importantly, the reasons supporting each are made explicit. So, instead of simply reading that it is good to "deliver as fast as possible" we learn how rapid delivery is supported by pull systems (where work is pulled into the current step from the prior step), how queuing theory helps us identify bottlenecks, and how to calculate the cost of delay (to see which bottlenecks are worth removing).
This book is the perfect blend of highly actionable instructions and descriptions of why those actions work. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wishes to improve his or her software development process. The authors' ideas are applicable both to projects using agile approaches today and to more traditional, plan-driven projects.

A good, practical book
By Mark Meuer
Our reading group at work recently read "Lean Software Development." There are several things I really like about this book:

1. Its thinking is clearer than most. The Poppendiecks make sharp distinctions between principles, tools, and practices. (More on this will follow.)

2. It presents an Agile approach without demanding that one follow all tenets of Extreme Programming (such as pair programming).

3. It recognizes that in the past it has been a mistake to think of software development as being roughly analogous to manufacturing. Creating custom software is not very much like assembling cars within a factory.. Software development is much closer to product development, much more like the work that goes into designing the car in the first place. Principles (not necessarily techniques!) that work well in product design can have a much more straightforward application in software design.

4. They specifically address the needs of safety-critical software, talking about how to apply these principles in environments that are heavily regulated or where a software failure may endanger lives.

The book does suffer at times from and affliction common to this genre: over-enthusiasm. There can be a sense that all we need to do is follow what they say and all will be well. But, for the most part, the authors provide reasonable, realistic guidance for those looking to improve the way they go about creating software.

Now that we have the overview, let's look at the meat of the book: Agile principles. There are seven Agile principles which should govern a group's software development process:

1. Eliminate Waste

2. Amplify Learning

3. Decide as Late as Possible

4. Deliver as Fast as Possible

5. Empower the Team

6. Build Integrity In

7. See the Whole

A chapter is devoted to each principle. In each, the principle is described, examples are given from both product and software development, and a number of "tools" are suggested as ways to apply the principle in software development.

The principles are valid within any development effort, software or otherwise. For example, a good process will always seek reasonable ways to eliminate waste. In product development and manufacturing, waste may include scrap material that does not end up in a product. In software, the definition of "waste" will include things like partially done work, extra processes, extra features, waiting,

etc.

It is very important to keep the distinction between principles, tools, and techniques in mind. Principles must be reasonably applied to a given environment. The authors put it quite well: (pp. 179-180)

* Eliminate waste does not mean throw away all documentation.

* Amplify learning does not mean keep on changing your mind.

* Decide as late as possible does not mean procrastinate.

* Deliver as fast as possible does not mean rush and do sloppy work.

* Empower the team does not mean abandon leadership

* Build integrity in does not mean big, upfront design.

* See the whole does not mean ignore the details.

"One team's prescription is another team's poison. Do not arbitrarily adopt practices that work in other organizations; use the thinking tools in this book to translate lean principles into agile practices that match your environment."

I strongly recommend this book.

Great Principles based on Bad Assumptions
By R. Lampereur
I am a senior software systems engineer working for an aerospace company. I recently read the Poppendicks' book and have mixed feelings about it. Overall they present some great lean development principles and tools that appear to be useful in boosting productivity in my software engineering organization. On the other hand, their understanding of CMM/CMMI is so off-base that it is hard for me to take them seriously as authors.

They misrepresented CMM several times in the book, so they either do not understand what CMM is and how it works, or they are intentionally misrepresenting it to "scare" people into using their lean software tools. The reality is that agile software development principles and tools fit perfectly into the CMM/CMMI models and the Poppendicks would have a much stronger book if they realized that. Rather than bashing CMM to make their tools seem more useful, they might do better if they realized that CMM/CMMI and lean software development can work perfectly together.

My advice to people interested in buying the book is to only read the book if you can take what the Poppendicks say with a grain of salt. Read about the lean principles/tools and think of how you could apply them in your software development environment. In the spirit of implementing the primary principle of lean development (i.e. eliminate waste), I would ignore the anecdotes they include in the book. They appear to be intentionally sensational while offering little value.

Opens the door to a mysterious book
By Christopher Rogers
Isaiah is difficult for me. I've read through it several times, noticing many of the high points (the prophecy of the Child born of a virgin in Isaiah 7:14; the suffering and death of the Messiah in Isaiah 53). But much of he historical context was lost on me. Rev. Smith, to me, is fairly easy to read, and really puts Isaiah in the proper context. Rev. Smith sees Isaiah as an inspired prophet of God, and is unencumbered by the unsanctioned so-called "analysis" of the liberal critics. Enjoy!

A guide to promoting literacy in the digital age

With young children gaining access to a dizzying array of games, videos, and other digital media, will they ever learn to read? The answer is yes—if they are surrounded by adults who know how to help and if they are introduced to media designed to promote literacy, instead of undermining it. Tap, Click, Read gives educators and parents the tools and information they need to help children grow into strong, passionate readers who are skilled at using media and technology of all kinds—print, digital, and everything in between.

In Tap, Click, Read authors Lisa Guernsey and Michael H. Levine envision a future that is human-centered first and tech-assisted second. They document how educators and parents can lead a new path to a place they call 'Readialand'—a literacy-rich world that marries reading and digital media to bring knowledge, skills, and critical thinking to all of our children. This approach is driven by the urgent need for low-income children and parents to have access to the same 21st-century literacy opportunities already at the fingertips of today's affluent families. With stories from homes, classrooms and cutting edge tech labs, plus accessible translation of new research and compelling videos, Guernsey and Levine help educators, parents, and America's leaders tackle the questions that arise as digital media plays a larger and larger role in children's lives, starting in their very first years of life.

Tap, Click, Read includes an analysis of the exploding app marketplace and provides useful information on new review sites and valuable curation tools. It shows what to avoid and what to demand in today's apps and e-books—as well as what to seek in community preschools, elementary schools and libraries. Peppered with the latest research from fields as diverse as neuroscience and behavioral economics and richly documented examples of best practices from schools and early childhood programs around the country, Tap, Click, Read will show you how to:

  • Promote the adult-child interactions that help kids grow into strong readers
  • Learn how to use digital media to build a foundation for reading and success
  • Discover new tools that open up avenues for creativity, critical thinking, and knowledge-building that today's children need

The book's accompanying website, TapClickRead.org, keeps you updated on new research and provides vital resources to help parents, schools and community organizations.

As good as it gets
By Faith Rogow, media literacy education maven
There are so many things I like about this book. It’s an easy and interesting read, which wouldn’t be particularly remarkable except that the book is a POLICY discussion.
Guernsey and Levine ask: How will children learn to read in a digital world and how do we make that happen in equitable ways? they provide this context:
1. The U.S. is failing to ensure that all (or even most!) children become reasonably literate,
2. Individual and national success in the foreseeable future is dependent on having adequate literacy skills, and
3. Whether digital technologies are part of the problem or part of the solution depend on the choices we make.
I hope their well-documented discussion will, indeed, inform policy. I know it will help educators and parents develop a nuanced understanding of the issues. They manage to deal with substantive controversies (e.g., whole language vs. phonics, screens and attention span, reaching beyond English-only, play and toys that talk to/with children, etc.) without sensationalizing. I can see this being used in teacher ed and early childhood certification programs for years to come.

With a creative and thoughtful eye, the authors look for strengths and weaknesses in research, practices, and promises. Notable observations include:
* Media and reading are not polar opposites. To underscore media’s role as an integral part of an ecosystem that nurtures literacy, they coin the terms “redia” and “Redialand.”
* Though we often pay attention to what children are doing and viewing, much of the relevant impact comes from the ways that adults use media.
* Apps tend to target a very narrow niche of simple literacy skills. We need to ask if that’s because the format of apps just isn’t well suited for more complex skills or if we just haven't yet figured out how to use the structure well enough.
* For most apps it is very difficult to find the names of the makers, so users can’t really tell if there were education or literacy or child development specialists on the team. For a media literacy geek like me, it is thrilling to see people ponder the quintessential media literacy question, “Who made this and why?”

And they don’t stop there. Levine and Guernsey actually include a discussion of media literacy education as an essential strategy, a rarity for books focused on teaching with technology. (Full disclosure: they cite a chapter I wrote in a recent anthology [ASIN:0415725828 Technology and Digital Media in the Early Years: Tools for Teaching and Learning] in the discussion). For media literacy educators or advocates who have been frustrated at ISTE conferences where most folks talk about using technology without ever addressing how to help students think about the tech they use, or who have been at NCTE or IRA conferences with lots of people who deride electronic media, this book will feel like home – welcoming and comfortable.

I wish the authors had treated us to their thoughts on games and gamification – not simple alphabet games, but games as narrative or games as sources of conversation. The omission is a minor flaw in an otherwise valuable reference. It’s definitely worth your time.

You won’t walk away with specific app or video recommendations or advice on which tablet your school district should purchase, but you’ll understand the issues and the research that might guide those decisions. And you’ll have a vision of the opportunities.

Fantastic. Parents- buy one for you and another copy ...
By SC Wagner
Phenomenal. Tap, Click, Read is a must for parents, educators and policy makers. Lisa Guernsey & Michael Levine tackle a critical issue of how to modernize reading education and improve literacy. Equal parts - embracing all types of reading with parent involvement - is the only way to get our kids reading. The coolest thing about this book is the way the authors bring to life the content through the www.tapclickread.org site. Fantastic. Parents- buy one for you and another copy for your kid's school teachers.

Great Read--Best and Most Balanced Book on a Controversial Subject
By Joe Blinn
As a mom of young kids and an educator I found this book to be the most helpful and well written one yet on the topic of early reading and screen-time! Why? Well first of all Guernsey and Levine have a very nice writing style and they seem to be objective--unlike other books on technology they write in plain language and they aren't impressed with all of the hype that technology companies and app developers would like us to swallow. Second, they take the reader on a journey from what they call the 'digital wild west' to a new place called Readialand, which hokey as it may sound at first blush, may in fact be the place our kids are most comfortable living forever more. Third, I also was shocked to learn that over half of all of American kids arent reading well by the time they are 9. Wow--that was a wake up call for me to make sure I am reading every night to my 3 and 6 year olds! Finally, They take the reader on really interesting trips to academic and industry labs and even internationally to see what experts are saying about what future reading in a digital age might look like. I came away with some real tips on things I can do as a teacher and more hopeful about the blizzard of media that surrounds us. All in all I really enjoyed this book--it was a quick read and highly informative!
