Superb & Unique
By Donald P. Reed
Is Sex Necessary, Or Why You Feel The Way You Do, James Thurber & E.B. White; Harper & Row Publishers (1st 1929...last 1990)

"From 1800 to 1900...love & marriage & children stood for progress, & progress is - or was - a calm, routine business. `Mrs. Hopkins,' a man would say to the lady of his choice...'Mrs. Hopkins, I am thinking...you & I should get married & have offspring. They are about to build the Union Pacific [railroad], you know, & they will need men.' Because parents can't always have men-children when they want them, this led to almost as many women as men working on the Union Pacific, which in turn led to the greater stature of women in the present Northwest than in any other part of the nation. But that is somewhat beside the point."

"Paranoia: The last stages of what was once a bridegroom."

ISN produced laughter of a sort never experienced before. Having already read a great deal of what E.B. White & James Thurber had written, this was almost unimaginable. But it is true.

The humor is so ethereal, the puns are so subtle, & the writing touch - satiric as it is - is so light, it's almost as if Harper had produced a fragile literary crme brle. To react too abruptly to its "flavor" is to endanger the very spell woven by these "quiet" but very creative authors. Skate lightly.

It's been eighty-two years since first publication & the humor still holds up. Given that the "shelf life" of written humor is so notoriously fragile, this places ISN in the ranks of the classics at the same time that you're just having fun reading it. Can't beat that.

Classic White & Thurber
By Michael F. Herrmann
A parody in classic vaudevillian style of the (then) newly emergent do-it-yourself psychology books. Thurber's drawing on p. 52 (Queen's House edition, 1978) with its accompanying text "This peculiar posture was discovered by Dr. Titbridge in a patient who for thirty years, boy and man, had been unable to tell love from passion and who allowed it to prey on his mind. Drawing from the Titbridge collection of American male postures." is, by itself, worth the price.

Atma Sakshatkar: Self Realization (Hindi) (Hindi Edition), by Davinder Gill

Since childhood I used to chant mantras but in ‘97, I fell ill due to over activation of the chakras. Then I was taken to Kapil Babaji who balanced my energy and taught me how to raise, slowdown, shutdown and restart the system incase of over activation. Most importantly, how to move from one centre of consciousness to another. In other words, I was taught how to activate different segments of the brain for Self-Realization. For deeper research, I took mantras for each centre from Swami Avdheshanandji and practiced the same for ten years along with Master Choa Kok Sui’s Pranic Healing courses - Basic, Advanced and Psychotherapy. In ‘98, I started helping other people on this path, though only through photographs mailed to me as it was not possible to attend to so many people in person. It takes few seconds to upgrade or balance the energy of a person but it takes hours to explain the science. So, I decided to write this book. It is a humble offering. As it is an endless journey, my search is still on. My apologies for any mistakes. Your suggestions for the improvement of this book are welcome. For further details, you can refer to books published by Bihar School of Yoga, as they have been one of the main sources of my knowledge on Vedic Science apart from His Holiness Kapil Babaji.

Unintentionally hilarious
By Cody Koeninger
Most of these "masterminds" come across as rather provincial, making for an unintentionally hilarious read. Stroustrup can't go much more than a page without complaining about Java. The creator of basic opines that, because all languages are basically the same, if you've learned one you can easily learn any . . . then later talks about how he is trying (and failing) to learn objective-C. Guido van rossum asserts that you can define reduce in a couple of lines of python, which you simply cannot do in a functional language. Huh?

reduce f z [] = z
reduce f z (x:xs) = reduce f (f z x) xs

Or is haskell not a functional language in his book, just like lisp is not a functional language?

Don't get me wrong, a few of the interviews are worth reading for something other than comedic value. When creators are actually willing to talk about the mistakes and tradeoffs they made, as the team behind Awk does, the results are sometimes illuminating. The interview with charles moore is completely insane, in a good way. Adin falkoff's comments on apl are interesting, and he does a good job of taking the high road when the interviewer attempts to provoke comparisons to other languages. Unfortunately the overall tone of the book drags it down to not much more than an amusing light read - good for a plane ride, but not worth coming back to.

An educational AND entertaining read
By Brian Peek
I've been reading this book off and on for the past week and I have to say I'm really enjoying it. It's great to get perspectives from the creators of a variety of programming languages and learn why they made the choices they did, good or bad.

As one of the other reviewers posted here, there are some unintentional funny moments when creators of one language criticize another and aren't exactly correct in their comments. Personally, I think that adds to the entertainment value of the book and shows that we're all human.

If you're looking for a strict textbook on programming languages, this isn't exactly what you're looking for. But if you'd like to glean some insight on 17 different programming languages, their creators, and their reasoning and opinions on what they and others have done, this is an entertaining and informative read.

Really Enjoyed It, Here's a Summary
By Shannon J. Behrens
In short, I really enjoyed it. Here's an extremely abbreviated and opinionated summary:

Adin D. Falkoff (APL) made programming as mathematical as possible.

Thomas E. Kurtz (BASIC) was generally a nice guy who wanted to bring programming to the masses.

Charles H. Moore (FORTH) frustrated the heck out of me. He stated that operating systems are the software industry's biggest con job. I disagree. Operating systems protect me to some degree from bad and malicious code. They also let me run multiple programs at the same time and allow me to keep running even when one of the programs crashes. He also said that a piece of code written in any other programming language will be 10 times as large (in number of lines of code) as the same code written in Forth. I'd like to see him try that trick with Python!

Robin Milner (ML) was completely fascinated with programming models and proving the correctness of code. That reminds me of the quote, "All models are wrong. Some models are useful."

Donald D. Chamberlin (SQL) showed me some of the history of SQL. I didn't know IBM research was such an interesting place.

Alfred Aho, Peter Weinberger, and Brian Kernighan (AWK) were as good as I expected.

Charles Geschke and John Warnock (PostScript) talked about Adobe and the history of PostScript. I just don't like that Charles guy, and I don't like Adobe. However, they're smart guys.

Bjarne Stroustrup (C++) was as frustrating as I expected.

Bertrand Meyer (Eiffel) was really interesting. He wrote a book in French that has had a profound impact on French programmers. If he had translated that book into English, it's likely he'd be as famous as, say, Richard Stevens (the author of "UNIX Network Programming").

Brad Cox and Tom Love (Objective-C) showed me that Objective-C's goal was to enhance C in the smallest way possible to make it a bit more like Smalltalk.

Larry Wall (Perl) was awesome, as usual.

Simon Peyton Jones, Paul Hudak, Philip Wadler, and John Hughes (Haskell) were fascinating, as usual.

Guido van Rossum (Python) was practical and interesting, as usual.

Luiz Henrique de Figueiredo and Roberto Ierusalimschy (Lua) were okay. (I'm a Python guy, so it's a bit hard for me to get excited about Lua.)

James Gosling (Java) appears to suffer from premature optimization.

Grady Booch, Ivar Jacobson, and James Rumbaugh (UML) left me even less interested in learning UML.

Anders Hejlsberg (Turbo Pascal, Delphi, C#) was awesome. I knew I liked this guy from previous books, but this interview made me like him even more.

Overall, I think this book was a bit drier than, say, Coders at Work: Reflections on the Craft of Programming, so you should read that one first. However, if you're a guy like me who loves programming languages, this book is a must read.

Difficult to Navigate, even harder to use
By Robert D. Watson
There are a large number of math projects here that are mildly interesting, if a little juvenile for most high school teachers to use. Some of them are very complicated, and others are just not complicated enough, but that's all fine by me - a little variety is certainly good. Most of them will require access to the school library or computer lab, and many will take a good 3-5 days in-class to take to completion as written.

Two problems: One is that the book is organized terribly, and the other is that this book doesn't teach a whole lot of math SKILLS.

The book is organized by what it ties into the general math curriculum. So instead of having "algebra" activities, it offers "Math and Language" or "Math and Social Sciences". This makes it very difficult to find specific activities that you can tie into more general lessons topics like proportions, solving equations or graphing.

And speaking of math topics, we get to mention the other major problem I have with the book: so many of these activities do not mesh with the curriculum that is taught in a traditional math class. Regardless of your opinions on what that curriculum should be, I find it difficult for people to argue that we need four to five three-day research projects on the history of famous mathematicians in a geometry classroom. There are a number of others that simply ask students to make decisions on what to spend a budget on, and a whole lot that involve you creating a "profile" of a person or country, which often touch on mathematics, but do not delve particularly deeply into any particular concept. There are some, such as the landmarks project that discuss ideas like proportionality in depth, but I think that too many simply leave these by the wayside in favor of implementing cultural or social aspects.

The book is massive, and by no means have I looked through or tried every project, but I have taken a number of ideas from this book and reworked them to my needs (adding reflection questions to the worksheets, more guidance for some students, and making a few activities more rigorous). The flower bed project (#6) was something that I had a lot of success with in a geometry class, and the aquarium project (#8 I think) was fun, but had to be modified significantly to make it any kind of challenge for my high schoolers.

Unfortunately, unless you spend a large amount of time sifting, organizing and recreating much of the book, you won't find this to be an instantaneous resource. I think that almost every math teacher could find something to like from this book, but if you're not willing to put in the time to use this resource, it could just be something that sits on your shelf. Far from the worst book I've read on the subject, but it definitely needs some work.

A Must-Have Resource for Home Schoolers, Too!
By Cynthia E. Downes
This is a must-have resource for all home school families! The book includes 60 lesson plans that reinforce math concepts and make learning math interesting and fun. Most important, it gives students a reason for learning math!

The lessons easily integrate into other class work including science, social studies, language arts, music, art, sports, recreation, and life skills. It's perfect for those who enjoy doing unit studies!

It was written for students in grades 6-12; however, it can be adapted to younger grades depending on interests and abilities.

How I would use it in a home school setting:

Home school parents can skim through most of the introductory materials that addresses classroom strategies. However, be sure to read over pages 24-42, which includes directions for writing in the math class, an outline of the basic writing process, ideas for using the Internet in math class, and assessment guidelines and forms.

Although each lesson discusses group activities and oral presentations, it's very easy to adapt these lessons to a home school setting. The projects can easily be done individually and written reports are sufficient. If you choose to have your child do an oral presentation, he or she can perform for family members and friends or in a support group or co-op setting.

I would recommend using the lessons in this book, as needed, as part of a unit study; on a once-a-month or once-a-week basis instead of a regular math and composition class; or as needed to work on a particular math concept.

Some of the lesson plans included are:

1. Math and Science: What is the Weather?, Designing a Flower Bed
2. Math and Social Studies: A Great Mathematician, Creating a Scale Map
3. Math and Language: Fictional Numbers-Writing a Story, Rating Math Web Sites
4. Math and Art: I Wanna Be Like Escher, Designing a Quilt Pattern
5. Math and Music: Numbers and Songs, The Math in Music
6. Math and Sports: Choosing a Membership Plan at a Health Club, Comparing Sports Superstar
7. Math and Recreation: Going on Vacation
8. Math and Life Skills: Making a Budget, Buying a Car, The Costs of Pets

Sample lesson: The Geometry and Art of Architecture

Students are directed to do research at the library and online to find examples of interesting architecture. A suggested list of buildings is included or you might select a structure that is related to a topic you are studying, such as a castle for medieval history or the Eiffel Tower for the country of France.

Students are to examine their structures for examples of geometry such as angles, polygons, three-dimensional shapes, symmetry, and parallel or perpendicular lines. They are to draw the structure on poster paper and then label the geometric forms. Finally, they are instructed to write a report about the selected structure, which includes background information on the building as well as a summary of the geometry it represents.

Sample lesson: The Benefits of Recycling

In this lesson, students are instructed to research the benefits recycling offers to people, companies and the environment. After they gather the information, they must analyze it and draw conclusions about the benefits of recycling based on facts. They are to explain their conclusions in a written summary and illustrate with graphs, charts, tables or posters. They must also include a list of resources used in bibliographical format. After the lesson, a visit to a recycling center is suggested. It would also be a good time to start your own recycling projects, such as recycling glass or paper.

Hands-On Math Projects is well worth the investment in time and money. It will stimulate your child's interest in math, as well as reinforce logic and writing skills.

This review is based on the 2nd edition for grades 6-12.

Great multi-level/age/grade resource
By Chris-"Elementary Montessori teacher"
I have third to sixth grade students in my classroom, they are talented, gifted and highly motivated. We use the projects in this book in conjunction with traditional as well as hands-on activities to cover curriculum and standards. The projects in this book are simple and straightforward enough for my younger students to understand and open ended enough to allow the older children the opportunity to go beyond the suggested activity. We have done the projects independently, in partnerships and in small groups. They present their projects to each other when completed. We're currently, doing the math newsletter activity which will become part of a schoolwide newspaper we are creating. The book is designed to link math to other disciplines: science, social studies, language arts, etc. Their final projects are often so thoughtful and well constructed that I include them in our class portfolio. When they complete one project, they beg for the next!

From the Inside Flap
Foreword

Data structures is a course taken by every programming student in every college in the United States. A knowledge of data structures has been a fundamental part of every Computer Science curriculum since the early days of PLI and Pascal. Of course, data structures in now taught using the C++ language. Actually, data structure concepts are language independent.

Currently, there is a shift in both text book and trade books to teach data structures with objects. With the latest standards from the ANSI/ISO committee, you will find that the Standard Template Library (STL) incorporates many of the components featured in traditional data structures courses.

Typically, you will find books on data structures or books on the STL. However, we have failed to identify or find books that carefully weave the concepts of both data structures and the STL together. In this text, we will go beyond an introductory works and integrate (side by side) many of the concepts taught in a data structures course with the newest STL techniques.

As such, this book is an intermediate level book for students and programmers who have mastered the fundamentals of the C++ language. However, even at the intermediate level, this book will have a broad appeal to all programmers interested in both data structures and the STL.

This book is not intended to replace college level data structures books. Instead, this text is intended to supplement them with the latest STL concepts. With complete code examples, you should find the solutions to many of the programming problems that plague both students and programmers alike.

If you are involved with data structures—you need this book.

Supercharge your C++ code! Master data structures and STL together!

When you understand data structures, you can command many of the most powerful, efficient algorithms ever created! Better yet, the C++ Standard Template Library bundles dozens of these advanced algorithms in a simple, reliable, easy-to-use form. Now, you can learn data structures and STL together, with the first book that teaches them both: Data Structures with STL!

Renowned programming instructors William Murray and Chris Pappas begin with the intermediate-to-advanced C++ features you'll need to know first, including namespaces, void * pointers, generic types, and template development. Then, using extensive code examples, they introduce every aspect of working with data structures and STL:

  • Understanding STL extensible framework and components
  • Working with STL: containers, iterators, and algorithms
  • Dynamic memory allocation/deallocation
  • STL-based portable solutions for array creation, element insertion/deletion, sorting, element output, and more
  • Clean, seamless integration of iostreams and exception handling

Now's your chance to supercharge the performance and reliability of all your C++ code—and dramatically enhance your own productivity at the same time. Data Structures with STL shows you how-more simply and easily than you ever thought possible!

Unreadable and confusing, several errors
By N. Novik
The stated purpose of this book is to teach data structures and the use of the C++ Standard Template Library (STL) at the same time. Judging by the first chapter only (by the time I got to page 23, I was so disgusted I logged in here to write this review), it fails on both counts.
The writing style is an awful combination of chatty (exclamation points are scattered throughout the text) and deliberately over-technical. In just one example, the authors use the word "syntactically" four times in six sentences for no reason; the sentences would be utterly unchanged in meaning by taking them out. That's the kind of writing I've seen from students who are attempting to make themselves sound knowledgeable when they aren't really sure of their ground or don't know how to express concepts in clear, simple language.
The lack of clarity is bad enough, but on top of that there are several typos and factual misstatements just in the small section of the text that I read. The opening lines of the foreword:
"A knowledge of data structures has been a fundamental part of every Computer Science curriculum since the early days of PLI and Pascal. Of course, data structures in [sic] now taught using the C++ language."
So I take it no one teaches data structures in Pascal anymore? In C? In Java?
The authors then go on to talk about misuse and ignorance of C/C++ features and use as their example the perfectly correct line of C/C++ code:
iaccumulator = iaccumulator + 1;
They state that using this instead of
iaccumulator++;
is incorrect, because the postfix operator "efficiently instructs the compiler to delete the double fetch/decode of the incorrectly written translation, and to treat the variable iaccumulator as its name implies -- as an accumulator within a register, a much more efficient machine language encoding."
This is ridiculous. First of all, any halfway-decent optimizing compiler should translate the first version just as well as the second. In any modern machine with a decent number of GPRs, if the variable was being used frequently it would be kept in a register anyway. Not to mention that at least half the target audience for this text (students with basic C++ experience taking a data structures class) would find this a completely incomprehensible explanation.
The example code is badly formatted (excessively-long lines, inconsistent indentation, poorly-placed comments) and inelegant. I came across at least one typo in the code that was not only confusing but would not have compiled, so it's fairly clear that the authors didn't try out all of the code in the book. Judging by the number of typos in general, that means that the code isn't reliable.
I strongly advise anyone against purchasing this book. If you're looking for a good data structures textbook, I would suggest Sedgewick's Algorithms in C (parts 1-4). That book is lucid, well-organized, with many very elegant, concise, and correct code samples.

One of the worst, if not the worst, for both topics.
By Rawitat Pulam
Prentice Hall has quite good reputation for publishing good computer books. (Although my favourite is Addison-Wesley.) This one is not one of them.
As a Data Structures book, this book deserved -1 star. As a STL book, however, it does deseverd 2 stars. So, I give it 1 stars in total.
Why? This book has one of the worst discussion/explaination on data structures I've ever read. It definitely not for someone who's learning the topic. Since learning data structures require much more discussion, like those in Mark Weiss's books and/or Carrano, Helman, Veroff's books (those are very good, really!). And, more important, this book does not talk about many important algorithm at all (saying the name of the algorithm doesn't count). For example, where is the explaination of Dijkstra's shortest path algorithm, B+ tree, etc?
It's not for someone who know the topics either. Since if one knows Data Structures, he/she would pick up the better book on STL (like Josuttis's and/or Musser's ) to learn STL. And write a better thing than what available from this book.
As the STL book, it should emphasize more on STL. For example, in the Priority Queue topic, instead of showing the example using priority_quere class, the author used his own implementation. The STL's implementation were briefly mentioned, and that is not enough.
Programming style is not-so-good, and some of their usages of STL is not-so-good is well. For example, Floyd's all-pair shortest path algorothm (page 388-399), there is the array version of the algorithm which was about one-and-half page long. And there is one that they called "STL version" which is 5 pages long... what happened? why it is that long? The answer: they used 4 pages to initialize vectors. Now, my question: "Who uses/initialize the vector container this way?"
One more thing, main function should return int, not void.
Conclusion: If you want Data structures book, look for something else. And if you want STL book, also look for something else. If you want Data Structures using/with STL, you have 2 choices 1) get something else for each, and 2) find some other books for it (Michael Main's lastest and Timothy Budd's DS using STL do the fine job, though...(Budd's is better, but I prefered Weiss's over both).

Core Stuff
By Jay J. Smith
I completed a review of the authors Template book and submitted it earlier. Then I was reminded that I also owned their Data Structure with STL book so I thought I would comment on this book too.
The writers said they wanted to write a book that complimented college text books on Data Structures. The twist that that they used (and the reason I bought the book) was the integration of STL into the matter.
I think the writers assumed you knew something about data structures and wanted a book with solutions (in STL) for many data structure applications.
They accomplished their goal. The book is filled with many neat solutions to standard data structure problems all in STL.
Buy the book if you are a student taking a Data Structures course. Buy the book if you just want to understand the STL better.
