Buy A Used Copy of Gregg Simplified, Not This Version

This review is not a critique of Gregg shorthand "Simplified Version," of which I am a huge fan and has proved invaluable for someone who attends frequent meetings. Instead, I am critical of the text being sold, because, unlike used copies, it does not contain an answer key to the exercises, which is extremely important. I learned this after I bought the new text, misplaced it, and ordered a used text for under $6.00, including S&H. Consequently, while I highly recommend Gregg Shorthand Simplified Version (there are a number of different versions and this is the most useful), I would only buy a used text.

Study this book! It's well worth your time.

Learning shorthand requires an effort, but it's well worth your time in the long run. Even if you quit after just studying the first half of this book, you will still be able to write at three or four times the speed of longhand. None of the systems based on the regular alphabet (such as Speedwriting, Stenoscript, Forkner or EasyScript) will let you attain such speeds. Moreover, Gregg shorthand is complete system of writing that you can use for all kinds of texts, not just for the stereotype formulas used in office dictation. And contrary to all the "modern", computer-based systems, Gregg shorthand is something you can use in all situations - you're not dependent on any kind of machine being at hand. It may take time and motivation to learn, but it's twice as useful as any of the "alphabet" systems, and it's a form of writing that will give you enormous benefit and pleasure both in your professional and your private life. I can recommend this book to anyone!

Great review to brush up on my shorthand from 44 years ago. Lessons are presented simply, in logical order, with lots of practice words available. I LOVE to make notes quickly, easily and in secret code!!!

Fr. Devin Roza, LC is visiting professor of New Testament at the Pontifical Athenaeum Regina Apostolorum in Rome. He has a licentiate degree in Sacred Scripture from the Pontifical Biblical Institute and a licentiate in philosophy from the Pontifical Athenaeum Regina Apostolorum.

Scott Hahn is Professor of Theology and Scripture at the Franciscan University of Steubenville, in Steubenville, Ohio. He also holds the Chair of Biblical Theology and Liturgical Proclamation at St. Vincent Seminary in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. He is author of The Lamb's Supper, Lord Have Mercy; Swear to God: The Promise and Power of Sacraments; and Letter and Spirit: From Written Text of Living Word in the Liturgy.

Amazing reference book on typology and the sacraments that belongs in your Bible Study library

Fulfilled in Christ is arranged like a compact encyclopedia on the sacraments. Because of this presentation, there is a brief guide on how to use this book before reading it. Each sacrament receives its own section, and each section contains types and symbols. Each type/symbol contains introductory material composed of Scriptural references, Catechism references, and cross-references to other types/symbols within the book. After the introductory material for each type/symbol are summaries of all the references to the specific type/symbol. For an example, both the sacrifice of Christ and the Eucharist were prefigured by animal sacrifices, We then are treated to numerous Scriptural references of animal sacrifices, both sufficient ones and insufficient ones. At the end of the book are appendices which contain readings from the Liturgy for each sacrament and a list of readings from the Liturgy of the Hours that the author, Dr. Devin Roza used in this book.

It's hard to say one has a favorite section in a book of this nature, but the Introduction in this book was very enlightening. For starters, it covered how many different Church Fathers made use of typology with their study and interpretation of types and symbols in the Bible. Dr. Roza also discusses the unity of the Old and New Testament and how God's plan was fulfilled in Jesus. And like any good scholar, he finally presents the other side of the argument, and explains why typology has fallen out of grace and how one must not accept all typology as good typology. His chief example is St. Cyprian of Carthage suggesting that Noah getting drunk on wine prefigured the Eucharist. That's absurd to even think about, and proof that even saints aren't perfect.

When I received this book, I thought I was getting a scholarly tome that broke down each sacrament in essay form or chapter form. The book is scholarly, but it does not read like an essay or typical book. It is instead more systematic and reads like a reference book, where if you had a specific type or symbol you wanted to know more about, you would flip to that specific section and read the notes and reference the specific Scripture and Catechism passages. This is not a bad thing. It is just not what I was expecting. If you want to have a comprehensive guide to Sacramental typology this book is first class. If you want to understand Scripture better, are a seminarian, or studying theology, then this book belongs on your reference shelf. It has earned a coveted place on my Bible study desk alongside some Bible dictionaries, concordances, and atlases, and is a volume I will reference for years to come.

Wonderful reference that found a prominent place in my library. I look forward to using it to develop lessons. Note: This is not a book to read, but it is an awesome guide to typology in the Bible. Anyone serious enough to study scripture should have this tool at their disposal.

However, only over the last couple of decades has blending become a very popular word-formation process. Today, in the English lexicon a large number of blends can be found which are no longer recognized as such since they have been in everyday use for quite a long time (Katamba 1994: 184). This can be explained by the fact that blends tend to be abbreviations in the beginning and, due to their word-like appearance, are lexicalized over time (Hadžiahmetović-Jurida 2006: 283). Although blending plays a significant role in terms of word-formation, it is hardly mentioned in monographs focusing on this particular aspect of morphology. This paper aims to explore the rules that determine the creation of blends as well as to have a closer look on two ways of categorizing them.

Excellent PowerPoint resource

This book helped me go from an intermediate user of an ancient PowerPoint version to an advanced user of the 2016 version in just a matter of days. Highly recommend getting the Kindle version on your computer and having PowerPoint open as you read the book, so that you can go back and forth as needed to practice and get hands-on experience. Would recommend to anyone looking to boost their PowerPoint skills. Well written and edited, no distracting errors (a pet peeve of mine).

Awesome book

This book is the account of a friendship between Kamala Das, a great artist and a great Indian woman, and her Western interlocutor, M. Weisbord. This is not a biography -- it is more interesting than that. Through the author's eyes, we encounter the enigmatic, charismatic Kamala Das. We enter the story as visitors to Kerala. Kamala Das (seen through Weisbord's Canadian eyes) is eccentric, unpredictable and hard to understand. She asks for an assistant, yet prefers to have her mail unanswered. She claims to be a libertine, yet is stubbornly worshipful of her homosexual, sadistic husband. She also disapproves of Weisbord's live-in love relationship. She claims to like solitude, yet never discourages hordes of fans who besiege her apartment. She worships Hindu gods, after she converts to Islam. Weisbord is unfazed, as she knows she is in the presence of a literary titan. Throughout the story, Kamala Das reveals her life, her daily activities, her concerns. In two trips to the Canadian countryside, she reveals her playful and friendly side. It is amazing how Canadian writer Weisbord makes herself overcome the sheer cultural difference of her culture from Kerala society and comes up with this portrait-memoir.

GREAT CONCEPT - HEALTHY ... AND IT WORKS !!!

After having read about the "Cabbage Soup" diet 35 years ago, my wife and I have made a huge pot of soup every other week or so and eaten it exclusively for two to three days in a row for many-many years. It works! It has helped us to remain healthy and at a stable weight right up to now in our retirement. This book has taken the Cabbage Soup concept to a whole new level! It is a treasure. In fairness, the Cabbage Soup diet's one major weakness is in its boredom and repetition. This book provides so many fresh new recipe's for different and unusual soups, that you may be overwhelmed. They each share this common denominator - they are ALL easy to make, have great variety and remain nutritionally healthy. Thank you Rachel Beller !!!!

Beautiful cookbook packed full of recipes

This is a wonderful cookbook! There is a great selection of recipes that I want to try--including breakfast smoothie bowls and vegetable dishes along with all of the soups. There are so many cookbooks out there that only have a handful of recipes that you want to try but as I was flipping through this book, I realized I wanted to try almost all of them! I also love the idea of the detox and weight loss plans using real whole foods and not some pre-packaged shake or "weight-loss" tea. The book is visually pleasing too-very nice photographs and charts. Love it!

I've now tried several different recipes in this book and I do like it. I had chosen it over another book, which I borrowed from the library and so glad that I chose this one, the other had a lot of strange ingredients - things I probably would never use - this one is more down to earth. As another reviewer mentioned, it's good to know how to cook, as some of the ingredients are not as clear as they might be, and agree with the longer cooking time for ingredients added later. I also find it easier to let the soup cool before spinning it and better to make half recipes, since they make a LOT of soup.

Clear and straightforward

In this book of essays, the great conservative philosopher from Spain exposes his theory of "vitalism". His main line of argument is that what really exists, what we truly are able to know it's there, is life. Not the I, not thought, nor matter, but life. Hence, the central problem of philosophy is the nature and essence of life: what it is, where it comes from, where it leads, how to cope with it. The whole idea is that philosophy should not be an eternal and circular reflection on abstract thoughts, but a well-ordered system of thought that enables us humans to live better, to understand better life and all that it is filled with. Caution: Ortega never argues in favor of a vulgar popularization or a cheapening of philosophy. He only tries to give the message that philosophy is for the living, for the common people (as individuals connected to community, but never as masses, cfr. "The revolt of the masses").
Philosophy, then, must be connected to real experience. The philosopher must come out of the Ivory Tower, and experience life in the streets. Otherwise, philosophy will remain an abstruse and esoteric matter, only for those initiated, and that philosophy is not much useful. As with other thinkers, Ortega is overlooked for not being included in the Anglo-Saxon canon, but I think his work is one of the most alive and meaningful of all philosophy. It does have a message for people living at the beginning of the 21 century, and it would be worthwhile to read or re-read his, by the way, extremely clear and sraightforward voice. Ortega is not a Nietzsche musing upon disordered dreams of supermen (although he elaborates on this very philosopher). His is a well-thought, systematic and clear view of the world, and that makes it a very readable work.

"What is Philosophy" presents a timeless question for philosophers intensely without intimidating the uninitiated. Ortega Y Gasset writes beautifully and clearly, touching on both Heideggar and Nietszche as well as a host of prominent European thinkers en route to a clearer understanding of the nature of philosphy and philosophizing. THE SPANISH PHILOSOPHER SAYS THAT PHILOSOPHY IS “KNOWLEDGE OF THE UNIVERSE”

Jos� Ortega y Gasset (1883-1955) was a Spanish philosopher, who also wrote books like An Interpretation of Universal History, History as a System and Other Essays Toward a Philosophy of History, etc.

This book is based on lectures given by Ortega in 1928 in Buenos Aires in 1928, and in Madrid in 1929; they were published in this form posthumously.

He said in the first chapter, “The fact that a truth… has value for everybody, and the fact that only one or two people---or only in a single period---will come to know it and to lend it their support---these are two completely different things; for the very reason that they are different one must put them together, bring them into harmony, overcome the scandalous situation of thought in which the absolute value of the truth seemed incompatible with the change in opinions which human history shows in such abundance.” (Pg. 25-26)

He says, “History’s profound assumption, then, is the complete opposite of a complete relativism. When history goes to study primitive man it assumes that his culture had meaning and truth, and that if it had these attributes it continues to have them… History is the second look which manages to find the reason for what appears to be unreason.” (Pg. 27)

He argues, “Thus one of the obligations of philosophy is to take a theoretic position, to confront every problem---not meaning thereby to solve it, but to demonstrate positively that it cannot be solved. This is the characteristic of philosophy as compared with the sciences. When these latter meet a problem which for them is insoluble they simply cease to deal with it. Philosophy, on the other hand, admits from the start that the world may be a problem which in itself is insoluble. And to demonstrate this fully would be the task of a philosophy which would completely fulfill its position as such.” (Pg. 63-64) Later, he adds, “Philosophy is knowledge of the Universe, or of everything there is, but when we set forth on its quest we know neither what there is, nor if what there is forms a Universe of a Multi-verse, nor whether Universe of Multi-verse will be knowable.” (Pg. 90-91)

He points out, “But some will ask, ‘How can we prove that someone else does in fact see what we ourselves cannot see? The world is full of charlatans, of the vain, the deceitful, the mad.’ In this case the criterion does not seem to be hard to find; I will believe that someone sees more than I when that superior vision, invisible to me, gives him superiorities which are apparent to me. I judge by its effects. Note, then, that it is not the ineffable character of mystical knowing or the impossibility of transferring it that makes mysticism of small esteem---we shall see that there are other forms of knowing which by their very structure are not communicable, and yet they continually cheer the prisoners of silence. My objection to mysticism is that out of the mystic vision no intellectual benefit redounds to mankind.” (Pg. 110)

He summarizes, “We have defined what we are attempting in the name of philosophy as one defines a project and a proposition. We have said that it is knowledge of the Universe, and that… all philosophic thought must obey two laws, or obligations; first, it must be autonomous, admitting no truth which it does not itself construct, and second, it must obey the law of… not contenting itself with any position which does not express universal values; in short, which does not aspire to the Universe.” (Pg. 121)

He argues, “Descartes… did not agree with me in putting in doubt the truth of the ancient categories and in particular, the classic notion of being… If it is indubitable that the appearance of a thought exists, one must admit under that appearance a latent reality, something which appears in that appearance, which sustains it and which it truly is. That latent reality I call the ‘I,’ the self, my real self I do not see, it is not evident to me---therefore I must reach it through a conclusion; in order to affirm the existence of the self I must pass across the bridge of a ‘hence.’” (Pg. 189)

He continues, “The external world does not exist except in my thinking of it, but the external world is not my thought… I am confronting the theatre, I am linked with the world… The theatre and I confront one another with no intermediary between us; the theatre exists because I see it, and it is just what I see of it, as I see it; it exhausts its being in its appearance. But it is not within me, nor is it confused with me; our relations are clear and unequivocal. I am the one who now sees it, it is what I now see, without it and other things like it, my seeing would not exist, that is to say, I would not exist. Without objects there is no subject.” (Pg. 197-198)

Your Options Handbook

I like this book. I've read a number of options books that go into a lot of detail without really providing a lot of information and in my opinion this book does provide good, relevant info. For example, the author provides information concerning the specifics of what he looks for in particular trades and then gives examples of making those trades. He breaks the book down into basics that are easy to understand, then moves progressively into what he looks for before entering a trade. He covers market news/data then moves into fundamental and technical analysis, then into option techniques and strategies, and then gets into option trades. From there he moves into the basic option trades (puts/calls/spreads) and then moves into more advanced techniques. Throughout the book he provides "trader tips" that are small summaries or tips that enhance the areas just covered. He devotes more of the book to the basics than the advanced techniques so I would recommend it for the less advanced trader who is looking to get into options trading. My advice for the new trader though would be to walk before you run. Study the book and become totally familiar with the concepts before trading with real money. All in all I have enjoyed the book.

Very Informative, must read.

I'd highly recommend this book to any beginning or intermediate options trader. Mr. Levy does a great job covering all the steps that he, as a professional trader, focuses on. He discusses what to look for fundamentally, technically and gives his personal rules regarding entries and exits, along with informative websites to check and touches on the often overlooked, mental aspects of trading. Options strategies are explained clearly and give actual trading examples from Mr. Levy's trading...something I found to be very helpful. I've read countless options books and he is the first to break down every aspect of the trading regime from A to Z. The book is clear and easy to understand, unlike most options book that read more like a textbook. Definitely a must read.

Excellent book on options and trading

Jared Levy has written a clear, concise book about options with easy to understand illustrations and approachable explanations.
The final chapter has excellent content, written by Dean Somes, about turning trading into a business. I don't know where a trader can find that kind of information other than this book.
Highly recommended.
