The Go-Go's lead singer who went on to a solo career recounts a remarkable early Cinderella story that morphs into a frank, though at times self-indulgent, story of drug abuse and failure. Hailing from a working-class section of Los Angeles, the eldest daughter of divorced parents, Carlisle struggled early on with shame over her mother's depression and her step-father's drinking problem; teased for her chubbiness, she sought escape from a difficult home and found it in the mid-'70s' burgeoning L.A. punk scene. Steeped in the brash music of Iggy Pop and Queen, crazy about the iconoclastic new look, she and her friends haunted Hollywood clubs while she worked as a hairdresser and secretary. In 1978 she, Jane Wiedlin, and Margot Olaverra came up with the idea of starting their own band, eventually adding Charlotte Caffey and Gina Shock, and within a short time the all-girl Go-Go's had moved from being a novelty to a super-cool pop band with their dance hit, We Got the Beat. Alongside dizzying stardom came the requisite drug-and-alcohol frenzy, and much of this memoir is a chronicle of one party after another and a list of celebrity who's who. Erstwhile Go-Go and distaff rock-music icon Carlisle delivers the goods on her battles with substance abuse and life on the road in the band that was a somewhat more organic version of the Runaways. The Go-Go's were the first all-female band to attain a number-one sales ranking with an album of original material played by the band. Although Carlisle's subsequent solo career has now overshadowed her Go-Go's days, at least artistically if not in the public consciousness, much of the fun here is centered on the wild and crazy partying on the road during the Go-Go's commercial ascendance. Social interactions and psychic adventuring with bands such as the Police provide the behind-the-scenes fodder that rock fans love in their stars' memoirs, and the fact that Carlisle also interacted professionally with the likes of Don Henley of the Eagles adds to her recollections. Belinda Carlisle's autobiography is one of the most fascinating books I have read in quite some time. I was riveted, shocked and disgusted as I read Carlisle's surprisingly open and honest confession about her life of self loathing and drug and alcohol abuse. I was aware of her debauchery during her days in the Go-Go's, but was completely unaware of her continued substance abuse and self inflicted mental torture during her solo career. I honestly could not put it down and read the entire 250+ pages in one day. If you were/are a Go-Go or Carlisle fan, this is not to be missed. Belinda was always and still is my favorite member of the Go-Go's and I thoroughly enjoyed following her heartbreaking journey from beginning to end. I am amazed and thankful she actually survived to tell the story of her rollecoaster ride of ups and downs she endured during her life and career. It's comforting to know Belinda has at long last found some sort of peace and come to terms with her turbulent and disturbing past.

The second aim is to present some systems of hybrid character, mixing Natural Deduction with other kinds of proof methods (including Sequent systems, Tableaux, Resolution). Such systems tend to be more universal and effective, because of the possibility of mixing strategies of proof search from different areas. All necessary background material is provided, in particular, a detailed presentation of Modal Logics, including First-Order Modal and Hybrid Modal Logics. The deduction systems presented in the book may be of interest to working logicians, researchers on automated deduction and teachers of logic.

About the Author

Andrzej Indrzejczak is professor of logic and Head of the Department of General Methodology at the University of Lodz, Poland. His scientific interests include the proof theory for non-classical logics, the philosophy of logic and the methodology of science. He is the author of three books and numerous papers concerned mainly with the investigation of proof techniques for non-classical logics, published e.g. in Bulletin of the Section of Logic, Logic Journal of the IGPL, Logic and Logical Philosophy, Logica Trianguli, and Studia Logica.

There is always the suspense of finding the answer to a riddle with just weak clues around you.
Many new sciences got their start at the grassroots level, not through academic training. There are many open doors you can enter to find your own niche. This idea must be something that allows you to experiment further, not a dead end. You test your idea with challenging questions. You repeat your work. Others repeat your work. They find the same things although they may explain them differently. You listen to everybody working on the same phenomenon.

Been there, done that

I bought this entire series at once. And regret it. I read the first book and loved it, but then.....if you've read one, you've read them all. The women are all tiny - like 5ft.- and skinny. No tall curvy ladies in any of the books. The men are almost indistinguishable from book to book. Huge guys who like to wear jeans unbuttoned. The sex scenes are the same. Even some of the dialogue. The phrases "So responsive." "Move." "Wet washcloth" "bobbing" "pop" "I'm humbled" were all in most, if not all books. All the men call the women "baby." No variation.
Even a few of the plots were repetitive, such as two stories of women running from arranged polygamous marriages. (FFM) The first 5 books are about one family, then it is just recycled in the remaining books in the series. Large family, all living together in a huge house, one daughter with a bunch of sons. Every book ends with an epilogue that includes a new house and/or a baby. So predictable it's painful.

Just a bit confusing...

I've never felt the need to give a customer review, but I felt that readers should be forewarned that the Author often forgets which person she's talking about. She frequently mentions Logan, but it should be Sawyer, and vice versa...especially when referring to family (she says Sawyer, but is actually referring to Sawyer's family). Don't get me wrong, I loved the story (and have read all of them), but the frequency with which the characters were inverted left me very confused at times.

Fundamentals of Structural Engineering provides a balanced, seamless treatment of both classic, analytic methods and contemporary, computer-based techniques for conceptualizing and designing a structure. About the Author

Dr. Jerome J. Connor is Professor of Civil Engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His research interests include computational mechanics, structural analysis, motion based structural design, and novel design methodologies for structural systems and has taught courses in computational mechanics and structural engineering. In recent years Connor’s work has involved motion based design and damage assessment of engineering materials and he is directing a number of projects related to the applications of structural control to large civil structures as well as investigating methods to quantify damage in engineering materials.

Dr. Susan Faraji has been Professor of Structural Engineering in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Massachusetts at Lowell since 1984. Dr. Faraji has close to three decades of teaching, research, publication, and consulting experience and has taught a wide range of courses at the undergraduate and at the graduate level, such as Concrete Design, Steel Design, Bridge Design, Seismic Design, Concrete Design, Finite Elements, Structural Dynamics, and Behavior of Structures. Her professional work involves the analysis, design (using the latest design codes), and computer modeling of a wide range of structures. She has worked on more than 30 bridges and on aircraft, elevators, pontoons, ramps, concrete parking garages, domes, culverts, retaining walls, and steel and concrete frame buildings.

This text is based on a one-semester graduate course taught by the author at The Fields Institute in fall 1995 as part of the homotopy theory program which constituted the Institute's major program that year. The intent of the course was to bring graduate students who had completed a first course in algebraic topology to the point where they could understand research lectures in homotopy theory and to prepare them for the other, more specialized graduate courses being held in conjunction with the program. The notes are divided into two parts: prerequisites and the course proper. Part I, the prerequisites, contains a review of material often taught in a first course in algebraic topology. It should provide a useful summary for students and non-specialists who are interested in learning the basics of algebraic topology. Included are some basic category theory, point set topology, the fundamental group, homological algebra, singular and cellular homology, and Poincare duality. Part II covers fibrations and cofibrations, Hurewicz and cellular approximation theorems, topics in classical homotopy theory, simplicial sets, fiber bundles, Hopf algebras, spectral sequences, localization, generalized homology and cohomology operations. This book collects in one place the material that a researcher in algebraic topology must know. The author has attempted to make this text a self-contained exposition. Precise statements and proofs are given of 'folk' theorems which are difficult to find or do not exist in the literature.

YA-- Alderman and Kennedy have taken the Bill of Rights and made it breathe. Their book considers 20 or so Supreme Court cases, the verdicts of which pivot on one of the first Ten Amendments to the U. S. Constitution. The cases chosen are not the landmark, precedent-setting ones with which most people are familiar. Instead, readers will find normal people who, because of circumstance, victimization, or character flaws, end up having their stories studied by the highest court in the land. As the authors acknowledge, "It is a fair summary of history to say that the safeguards of liberty have frequently been forged in controversies involving not very nice people." Several life histories read more like soap operas and B-movies than a law text. The writing is clear, direct, and often poignant. There are photographs of some of the protagonists that add to the down-to-earth character of this study. Finally, it is entertaining.

The authors use fascinating accounts of real-life controversies to introduce the general reader to the Bill of Rights. Nineteen vignettes illuminate virtually all rights guarantees and demonstrate their contemporary relevance. Of particular interest are the stories about the development of public land held sacred by Native Americans (First Amendment) and the attempt to protect minors testifying in molestation cases (Sixth Amendment). Although the authors emphasize the human side of the Bill of Rights rather than its judicial interpretation, their legal analysis is sound, and the extensive notes and bibliography provide direction for further research. Entertaining and Informative

I was assigned this book as supplementary reading for my AP government class, and while some of my friends didn't like it, I loved and am now re-reading it.
The authors admit that their intent was 1) to make people see the Bill of Rights as more than a legal document, but a guideline created by framers who had no idea how different the nation would be centuries later, and 2) to make people think.
For each of the first 10 Amendments to the Constitution, the authors pick a case, usually criminal, and discuss it in relation to the amendment. They choose their cases carefully, and all are thought-provoking.
The Bill of Rights was created to protect the people from the government, and includes several rights delegated to those accused of crimes. However, in one poignant case, the right to confront the witness is used to declare an accused child molester's trial invalid. However, the book also lists many instances in which the Bill of Rights served as the final defense in a couple accused of Communism during the McCarthy era.
While some may find the book boring, because they're not interested in hearing about politics, many would find this book enjoyable to read, especially if they are interested in law.

Readable, Informative look at Bill of Rights

This is a nicely readable look at the U.S. Bill of Rights in action. Authors Ellen Alderman and Caroline Kennedy provide 20 concise real-life stories that define our rights and freedoms. These case studies deal with such issues as free speech, gun control, government powers, the rights of the accused, the death penalty, etc. Does the First Amendment give the Ku Klux Klan the right to broadcast on local cable television? Can the City of Detroit tear down an existing neighborhood to build an auto plant? Must two terrified young girls testify against their accused molester from the witness stand, or does the sixth amendment permit them to do so via closed circuit TV? The authors present these and several other equally interesting cases. Readers learn the facts, the competing legal arguments, and the eventual decisions of the courts - decisions that sometimes left the judges bitterly divided.

Since their adoption in 1791, the Bill of Rights have endured over two centuries of societal and technological change. This is a readable, thought-provoking, and informative look at those ten amendments and their application to life in the USA.

If you've ever been surprised by the ruling of a court or a judge in regards to matters whose resolution would seem obvious to the casual legal observer, then perhaps you should read this book. Kennedy and Alderman walk through each of the "rights" we are guaranteed by the Constitution and give examples of court cases and decisions that often might seem counter-intuitive.

Reading and understanding this book can help one become a more responsible and informed U.S. citizen.

I'm always finding myself referring back to this book, my most beat up, the most well used in my modest collection.
