This book is the second of two volumes published in the context of the research project 'Protecting Young Suspects in Interrogations'. This EU-funded research project sprung from the observation that knowledge of the existing level of procedural protection offered to juvenile suspects during interrogation is limited. The research project aimed to fill at least part of this gap by shedding more light on the existing procedural rights for juveniles during interrogations in five EU Member States with different systems of juvenile justice (Belgium, England and Wales, Italy, Poland and the Netherlands). In doing so, it intended to identify legal and empirical patterns to improve the effective protection of the juvenile suspect. The project has been a joint effort of Maastricht University, Warwick University, Antwerp University, Jagiellonian University and Macerata University in cooperation with Defence for Children and PLOT Limburg. The results of the first part of the project - a legal and comparative study into existing legal procedural safeguards for juvenile suspects during interrogation in the five selected Member States - have been published in a separate volume (M. Panzavolta, D. de Vocht, M. van Oosterhout and M. Vanderhallen, Interrogating Young Suspects: Procedural Safeguards from a Legal Perspective, Cambridge: Intersentia 2015). This second volume reflects the results of the second and third part of the research project. First, it contains the results of the empirical research conducted in the five Member States consisting of focus group interviews and observations of recorded interrogations. The empirical findings of each Member State are discussed in separate chapters to provide an in-depth account of perceptions and practices in the context of each jurisdiction. Second, the country reports are followed by an integrated analysis resulting from the merging of the legal and empirical findings offering a comparative overview and combining the national findings into an integrated perspective. Finally, the book contains a set of guidelines - a framework of minimum rules - developed on the basis of the research project's findings. The guidelines and their additional explanatory remarks include recommendations for good practices and are intended to serve as an inspiration for promoting good practice in the context of juvenile suspect interrogations throughout the EU. The book is intended for practitioners, academics, researchers and policy-makers working in the area of juvenile justice and interrogation. About the Author
Michelle Spring, a Canadian who has lived in England for much of her adult life, taught social science before becoming a full-time writer. Her six published crime novels include Every Breath You Take (short-listed as Best First Novel for both an Anthony and an Arthur Ellis Award), Nights in White Satin, In the Midnight Hour (winner of the Arthur Ellis Award for Best Novel), and The Night Lawyer. She mentors novelists, and teaches both creative writing and academic writing. She is currently Royal Literary Fellow at Magdalene College, Cambridge.Laurie R. King is a third generation Californian with a background in theology, whose first crime novel (A Grave Talent) won the Edgar and Creasey awards. Her yearly novels range from police procedurals and stand-alones to a historical series about Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes (beginning with The Beekeeper's Apprentice). Her books have won the Edgar, Creasey, Wolfe, Lambda, and Macavity awards, and appear regularly on the New York Times bestseller list. King mentors novelists, and teaches both creative writing and academic writing. She is currently Royal Literary Fellow at Magdalene College, Cambridge.

Not genre-specific enough and a very weak chapter on "Plotting"

If you own Writer's Digest's "Write Great Fiction" series, like I do, or a collection of similar books, you will regret buying this book. Chapters 1 and 2 of Part 1 seemed to promise great stuff with introductory discussions about crime and crime writing. But further down the line, things start to get watered down from crime-specific tips to general guidelines on storycraft applicable to almost any genre. The chapter on "Plotting" (only 13 pages) was a wishy-washy discussion on the "organic approach" vs the "orderly approach" (pantser vs outliner). It was a far cry from my expectation of solid nuts-and- bolts on plotting. Which brings me to my recommendation. For an excellent and detailed step-by-step treatment on plotting a thriller and mystery, go for James Frey's "How to Write a Damn Good Mystery" and "How to Write a Damn Good Thriller". Don't get both, buy either, as there's duplication of material.) "Part II: Tips and Takes" did not keep me from nearly dozing off. For example, Lee Child's essay in large part discussed that homo sapiens out-survived the Neanderthals because the former were able to communicate. Then story-telling over a roaring fire in caves was invented, blah, blah, blah. Two other contributors defended the relevancy of the locked-room mystery (for which British writer Agatha Christie was famous for) in current times. Maybe they being British had something to do with their opinions. "Part 3: Write on: Getting Your Story Across" is near-useless to published writers. Only the chapter "Distinctive Elements of Crime Fiction" hit the bull's eye on what this book was supposed to deliver. But overall, as a touted how-to on crime and thriller writing, this book misses its target by a mile!

Imagine someone holding out a silver platter for *you* with THE KEYS TO UNLOCK THE GATES TO YOUR VERY OWN HEAVEN ON EARTH... THAT'S WHAT RIKKA'S "21 SECRETS" IS! I'm not kidding or exaggerating even a little bit! If anything, it's an understatement...The potency of this book is beyond words but I'm trying my best here to express it because it's been such a HUGE GIFT in my life. I can't imagine NOT having this book in my life and I can't help but wonder what a gift of magnitude this book could be for someone reading this review as they consider the possibility of adding it to their life... I've read *many* best selling self-help books and I can tell you they all pale in comparison to what's in the "21 Secrets". I haven't heard anybody else on the planet deliver the information, tools and processes that are in this book the way Rikka does. The price of this book surprised me at first but now that I've made my way through the 21 days and it's had such a life altering impact on me I can say the value of this book is many times greater than the price. My money flows have expanded already so the book pays for itself! Plus, I'm happier and more empowered than ever and my body has changed in amaaaaaazing ways! (I easily lost 25 pounds and I look and feel better than ever!) My social life and dating life are waaaaay more fun too! ;-) I can't wait to read "21 Secrets" again and see what else is possible for me and my life beyond this! Great set of tools

More than inspirational - These are helpful in expanding ones energy from places that we are stuck into greater awareness, getting us out of limitation and judgement, and into joy. But I recommend having the accompanying book,as well, in order to have a better understanding of the cards and the process... Unless you are already familiar with Rikka's concepts.

I've grown to like the deck, althou i'd bought it by mistake.

The book is good and she put her self awareness of things into it, from the top of her thought and feelings. I had to find the book separately. Be careful to know what is what, because of the unclear descriptions either one comes under. They were supposed to take care of that, but have not yet.

Stephen Kotkin's introductory chapter offers a masterful overview of Mongol studies. The essays in Part I examine Sino-Russian competition over Outer Mongolia. Part II looks at international diplomacy, including the involvement of Japan. In Part III the focus is on contemporary issues ranging from economic development and cultural change to nationalism and emergent elites. A concluding essay looks at Mongolia's foreign policy and particularly its relations with the surrounding states, Russia and China.

About the Author
Stephen Kotkin (Ph.D. University of California, Berkeley) is Professor of History and teaches European and Asian history at Princeton University, where he also serves as director of Russian Studies. He is the author of Armageddon Averted: The Soviet Collapse, 1970 2000 (2001) and Magnetic Mountain: Stalinism as a Civilization (1995) and is a coeditor of Mongolia in the Twentieth Century: Landlocked Cosmopolitan (1999). His upcoming book is entitled Impaled Horses: Labyrinths of the Ob River Basin, which is a study of the Ob River valley over the last seven centuries. Future works include a biography of Joseph Stalin entitled Stalin s World. Professor Kotkin has also served twice as a visiting professor in Japan.

Informative in some aspects

I was hoping for something that explained more of the current social and cultural conditions of Mongolia. The title of this book is somewhat misleading, this book is a concise history of Foreign politics imposed on Mogolia and the conditions of foriegn relations with Mongolia, but it does not seem to say much about the attitudes of the Mongolians. This book would be good to cite in a history essay.

Impressive introduction

It is rare to find edited volumes which are so well organized and form a coherent nalaytical narrative. Three major themes: Mongolia's relations with Imperial China. They show how the colonizing policies of the late Qing dynasty in Inner Mongolia pushed Outer Mongolia into the arms the Russians. Second, how Outer Mongolia which by 1922 had become a Soviet satellite tried to survive the triple power rivalry between Soviet Russia, the Republic of China and Imperial Japan (the latter promoting pan-Mongolia). Yet hopes after joining the Soviet attack on Japan in the latter days of WWII in order to unify with Inner Mongolia failed. The final part deals the transformation of contemporary Mongolia, the situation of mongolian minoritiesin Russia and China, and with its current foreign relations, notably its reorietation towards the West, that is: the US and Japan, which are the morst responsive, without antagonizing its two powerful neighbors.
If there is any criticism, than Mongolia's current economic na dpolitical transformations remains somewhat sketchy. Also the quality of maps leaves the reader somewhat hazy at times(e.g. when there are references to Mongolian minorities outside the country)

Solid (and heavy)

I have the Sixth Edition. Yes, it is 3000+ pages and is printed on wafer thin paper.

The content is excellent for security professionals, particularly those at the management level. There are 220+ articles within the 10 (ISC)2 domains on a wide variety of topics. Most of the stuff is higher level but just technical enough for you to have confidence in the concepts presented. It would probably be typical that you'd read an article in here for one of three reasons: background research for an immediate decision that doesn't require detailed technical knowledge; introduction to concepts that will require further in-depth research; or research for a presentation to senior management, in which case you'd have to distill and simplify conceptually (something you're probably already used to).

You will find multiple articles on single topics- some more complete than others, and potentially with a variety of perspectives, so you'll have to make your own calls on what's presented. It's not a "InfoSec Management for Dummies" book that will give you easy answers to your problem or a step-by-step "how to implement an InfoSec program" guide; it's more like an encyclopedia for research that you can use to factor into making your own, independent decisions. For example, there's not a lot of specifics on actual risk assessment techniques, but there are high level articles on the principles.

I wish each of the individual articles were specifically dated so I'd know the time context; seeing a statement like "the position of CISO was virtually unheard of five years ago" or even "80 percent of companies monitor their employees' email" means less without knowing when the article was written.

I could probably find a lot of similar information Googling for it, but Google doesn't seem to be what it once was (or the Internet for that matter... so much for the days of shared research) and my time is too valuable to spend a lot of it culling through blogs, noisy forums, and marketing junk disguised as whitepapers to get this information.

For the record, I have passed the CISSP exam. I did not use this book, nor would I recommend it as a study guide. I bought this particular book because I needed it as a reference for my work. If you mastered this book cover to cover and didn't read anything else, you'd probably do OK on the exam, but there are far more efficient means to getting there.

If your goal is to pass the CISSP exam, this book may help, but there are better books out there. If your goal is to actually dig deep into the security domains, this book contains a vast collection of security related topics that may help you reach that goal.
I gave it a 2 star because I was disappointed at the number of errors and omissions I discovered in this book, for example chapter 4 has 4 dates for ITGI's begining which are all wrong, Chapter 8 has the correct date. as matter of fact if I was the editor of the book, I would remove the entire chapter 4. I was happy to see Kevin Henry bring up the "placement of security" but he does not take it far enough. So chapter 14 we are back to "IT" based information security. I think it is time for security experts to start writing outside the box, most companies have confidential information that is not "IT" related, take contracts as an example.
Chapter 76 "Intrusion in information system security simply means the attempts or actions of unauthorized entry into an IT system. " really!, this is 1990's way of thinking Gildas Deograt-Lumy Roy Naldo Please read The Art of Intrusion by Kevin D. Mitnick.
I would write a book describing all that is wrong with this book, only if I had the time and writing skills some of which was wasted reading this book, Oh by the way Mr.Ralph Spencer Poore, there are so many exciting new standards coming up with cryptographic key management you should have and could have written about, such as the 1619.3, but I guess I have to read yet another book to learn about it.

Common sense welfare beats scientific justification

FIVE, or even six, stars for the argumentation, but I have given four stars only because it will take a fair amount of scientific knowledge and stamina to read. Rollin is well known in the animal welfare field. His argument, developed in repeated minute detail, is that scientists who experiment on animals are so closed off from reality, and have such a vested interest in deluding themselves that animals don't suffer, that they are the only people who can't see the blindingly obvious - that animals feel pain pretty much the same way that we do.
For scientists, and especially anyone dealing with animals in any way, I would consider this book mandatory reading. It counterbalances all the dry science about how animals work with a a good look at how they think.
For non-graduates it's too technical. Words like paradigmatic and ontological come thick and fast.
