About the Author
Born in Lincolnshire, England, Michael Francis Gilbert graduated in law from the University of London in 1937, shortly after which he first spent some time teaching at a prep-school which was followed by six years serving with the Royal Horse Artillery. During World War II he was captured following service in North Africa and Italy, and his prisoner-of-war experiences later leading to the writing of the acclaimed novel 'Death in Captivity' in 1952. After the war, Gilbert worked as a solicitor in London, but his writing continued throughout his legal career and in addition to novels he wrote stage plays and scripts for radio and television. He is, however, best remembered for his novels, which have been described as witty and meticulously-plotted espionage and police procedural thrillers, but which exemplify realism. HRF Keating stated that 'Smallbone Deceased' was amongst the 100 best crime and mystery books ever published. "The plot," wrote Keating, "is in every way as good as those of Agatha Christie at her best: as neatly dovetailed, as inherently complex yet retaining a decent credibility, and as full of cunningly-suggested red herrings." It featured Chief Inspector Hazlerigg, who went on to appear in later novels and short stories, and another series was built around Patrick Petrella, a London based police constable (later promoted) who was fluent in four languages and had a love for both poetry and fine wine. Other memorable characters around which Gilbert built stories included Calder and Behrens. They are elderly but quite amiable agents, who are nonetheless ruthless and prepared to take on tasks too much at the dirty end of the business for their younger colleagues. They are brought out of retirement periodically upon receiving a bank statement containing a code. Much of Michael Gilbert's writing was done on the train as he travelled from home to his office in London: "I always take a latish train to work," he explained in 1980, "and, of course, I go first class. I have no trouble in writing because I prepare a thorough synopsis beforehand.". After retirement from the law, however, he nevertheless continued and also reviewed for 'The Daily Telegraph', as well as editing 'The Oxford Book of Legal Anecdotes'. Gilbert was appointed CBE in 1980. Excellent example of british spy genre

This particular book is a series of short stories about a two man British espionage team around WWII. It is a wonderful introduction to Mr. Gilbert's very British and very dry style of writing while also being very exciting. The last story in the series, which involves a deerhound, is one of the best. If you can find a copy of this book, buy it

GREAT FUN--TWO ELDERLY SPIES OUT-DO THE YOUNG SPIES

When Michael Gilbert is at his best, few writers can equal him. In GAME WITHOUT RULES (1967), we have eleven of his highly enjoyable "spy thrillers"--all of them starring Mr. Calder and Mr. Behrens, his duo of elderly spies/counterspies. In most of these stories, our pleasure chiefly comes from seeing the intelligence and courage and quirky calmness of these two senior citizens, functioning effectively in suspenseful and dangerous situations. (I am reminded of an enjoyable 1969 film with a similar premise--THE OVER-THE-HILL GANG--about a group of elderly Texas Rangers who succeed where younger men cannot.)

In alphabetical order, here are the stories: "The Cat Cracker" (about a scientist who plans to leave Britain); "Cross-Over" (concerns an attempt to rescue a double-agent); "The Headmaster" (a Fair-Play Puzzle story about detecting who is a spy known as the Headmaster); "Heilige Nacht" (about a defector with a code machine; has a scathing scene of diplomatic incompetence and a touching scene involving the courage of one of Mr. B's friends--with a nice quotation from Schiller--this is one of my favorites in this collection); "A Prince of Abyssinia" (a touching story involving a magnificent dog that we are compelled to love--with some unpleasant elements AND a huge plot hole); "Prometheus Unbound" (a story with a surprise ending, as Mr. C. and Mr. B. re-enact Conan Doyle's "The Adventure of the Dying Detective"); "On Slay Down" (a "humorous" story about the killing of a female traitor); "The Road to Damascus" (a complex story about a Soviet spy--although it is full of plot holes and leaves loose ends, it has been anthologized many times; despite its flaws, it is very clever in many parts and very enjoyable); "The Spoilers" (Mr. C. & Mr. B. help catch a gang of renegade ex-military blackmailers; very suspenseful and fairly satisfying); "Trembling's Tours" (another complex story about Soviet spies, again full of plot holes; this story was originally published in July 1962, in ARGOSY magazine in the UK as "Fear and Trembling's," and is a rare instance of Gilbert writing a "Didactic" or "Rhetorical" work: at the end, when he and the police fail to catch one of the spies, Mr. C. concludes that government security agencies ought to cooperate with each other; almost 50 years later, this "lesson" still needs to be heeded, both in the UK and in the US); "'Upon the King ...'" (an uncharacteristic story focused on a boy, a young monarch who is returning to his country from Britain, who is kidnapped and shows more resourcefulness than Mr. C. and Mr. B. do).

Odds and Ends: one paragraph on page 174 of my (hardback) copy of this book has too many misprints to be read; despite the title GAME WITHOUT RULES, several "rules" are presented in several of these stories; insofar as the two main characters are middle-aged bachelors who never think about sex (and the male spy they work with in one story has been a virgin), the author may be deliberately setting up a contrast to Ian Fleming's James Bond thrillers.

Finally, if you enjoy these stories, the really good news is that Michael Gilbert collected 12 more in a similar book titled MR. CALDER AND MR. BEHRENS (1982).

About the Author
James Eagleson is a highly trained officer in the field of criminal interdiction. He began his career in law enforcement when he was hired by the North Charleston, SC Police Department. After a little over a year he moved on to work for the South Carolina Department of Public Safety. He worked as an interdiction officer on the I-95 corridor. After several years on the State's Drug Unit, he was assigned a K-9 Officer position. James’s work as a proactive commercial vehicle enforcement officer resulted in numerous major seizures of contraband. In 2001, James was named Police Officer of the Year by three different agencies (the South Carolina Department of Public Safety, the South Carolina Department of Revenue and the South Carolina Department of Transportation). In 2003, James was nominated as the South Carolina Department of Public Safety Commissioned Officer of the Year. In 2004, James was named the South Carolina State Police Officer of the Year. James was certified by the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy as a police instructor. At the academy level he has taught criminal interdiction tactics. James has been an interdiction instructor at the national level teaching for prestigious entities such as the Drug Interdiction Assistance Program (DIAP). James has taught hundreds of classes for the DEA, Northeast Counterdrug Training Center, RCTA, HIDTA, including instructing at Advanced Agent Training in Quantico, Virginia. He has also taught at the US Border Patrol Academy in Artesia, New Mexico. After he retired, James founded The 420 Group where he is the Director of Training. The 420 Group teaches classes on Criminal Interdiction throughout the country. This criminal interdiction training has benefited thousands of officers from the federal, state, county and local level. James continues to pursue his passion - instructing law enforcement officers on the topic of criminal interdiction- and has logged thousands of hours of instruction. In 2012, he took The 420 Group international when he taught interdiction in the Balkan region of Serbia and Bosnia. He supervised a team to work the border in Bosnia and labored alongside and trained Customs Officers from three countries. He has since taught in Macedonia and Albania. As the Director of Training, he has built the very first ever law enforcement resort for police officers. Eagleson has given us an excellent "how to" manual in spotting

This book is a must for any Officer/Deputy/Trooper wanting to start off or hone their skills in drug/criminal interdiction. Mr. Eagleson has given us an excellent "how to" manual in spotting, stopping and processing the smugglers running dangerous drugs on our nations roadways. I have used the methods in this book, as well as his other reference "Its 4:20 somewhere" and I can tell you they work. I keep this book in my patrol car and reference it almost every shift. If you are wanting to make a difference and bring down drug mules running dope into your jurisdictions everyday, use this manual. Aside from being practical this book is at times hilarious and very enjoyable to read, cannot recommend enough.

A rock solid interdiction book

I rarely leave reviews. But this time, I couldn't resist. Jim is an outstanding person with a true knack for drug and criminal interdiction.

I came across his book by mere chance. The book is easy to read - it's stuff you read today and use the same day/ night. I'd almost call it a leave nothing behind book. He give so many tips and advice it makes it worth it.

On a side note, I have emailed Jim before and asked a question. We now talk every now and again. Just texted him yesterday in regards to some suggestions in interdiction tools.

I highly recommend reading the book.

A real eye opener

I read this book and changed a way of the instruction to a subordinate and the staff. The atmosphere in the company is replaced by doing it, and I think that productivity went up it than before. It is recommended one book for a person having a problem for the management in the company.

Build your CEO Capital

In CEO Capital, Leslie Gaines-Ross has written an insightful and enlightening book for those who want to increase the positive visibility and reputation of their CEO. It is a surprise to this reviewer that more books have not been written on the subject of how to master the art of building your reputation when both your own personal future and corporate future may be resting on it.
The celebrity hungry society of today looks to corporate movers and shakers especially the CEO as icons of a particular company. Think about Lee Iacocca, Jack Welch, Richard Branson, Bill Gates and Steve Jobs to mention just a few. How much of your opinion of these companies (and notice I don't even have to mention which companies they run/ran) is based on your perceived image of the CEO? The phrase `you are your company' has never been more true, especially in the post Enron & Arthur Anderson world. How has your opinion of Enron changed now that you know more about Jeff Skilling and Andrew Fastow? Despite any fraud at Enron being committed by the few and not the masses of the organization, our entire perception of Enron has shifted to the iconic few.
Part I of CEO Capital is a contextual look at CEO capital: what it is, where it comes from and how it can be built. Gaines-Ross draws us in by looking at the CEO Effect by citing some examples as far back as 1985 starting with Roberto Goizueta, then CEO of Coca-Cola and the whole `New Coke' revolt, that could have been a fatal disaster for the company. But Goizueta, trading on his CEO capital, not only avoided being removed but was able to bring the company back even stronger.
Part II is most interesting and is centered on the five stages postulated in the CEO capital model which take you by the hand, and step by step go through best practices (ed: hate that term but in this situation it is apt), principles and linkages to factors affecting the building of CEO capital. As the book says, `the reader may be left with the impression that the stages read almost like a manual on how to lead a company. This perception is quite acceptable and entirely reasonable because nothing is more conducive to building CEO capital than building a strong, high-performing company. Any similarity between the two is entirely intentional.' Which is indeed how it reads, but in doing so, broadens the scope of the content to be relevant to a wider audience of business managers and executives who may not be leading Fortune 500 type companies (yet!). In fact, they may be the very leaders who will gain most from this book, since they are not too arrogant to learn and may gain the most from any capital building opportunities presented to them.
Chapters in the book include guidance on the Countdown (the time before the CEO-elect takes office), the First One Hundred days and the First Year, and then of course the second year in office which is always much harder than the first.
Gaines-Ross has written a truly pioneering work - overall an excellent book on a little-written about subject. The book is practically written and you should not let its somewhat `user manual' style detract you from putting its advice into action. Recommended for CEOs and CEOs to-be of all sized companies, as well as other corporate officers and marketing/PR professionals who may guide along the process.

Immense credit must be given to Dr. Gaines-Ross who bravely and successfully takes on, notwithstanding the post Enron anti-CEO environment, the hypersensitive issue of CEO reputation. Yes, agrees Gaines-Ross, being a high profile, ego obsessed CEO is asking for trouble and is to be avoided like the plague. She refuses, however, to engage in the now fashionable tendency toward unrestrained CEO bashing, preferring instead a reasoned, astute and carefully researched analysis of the CEO's role.
While adding her voice to those who deride media hyped personalities, what she refers to as big "C" Celebrity CEOs, she cautions that old fashioned leadership is still desirable. When engaged in by talented CEOs, it may, indeed should, lead to the creation of an executive persona. Such a persona need not require media exposure and is entirely compatible with sound corporate practice. Such persona bearing CEOs are small "c" celebrated CEOs, who "by dint of strong leadership, discriminating vision, force of character and other admirable traits become celebrated by their employees, their industry, their peers, and occasionally (though not necessarily) even the media for jobs well done."
Gaines-Ross' book amounts to a much needed, intellectually honest warning not to let the anti-CEO backlash go too far. Refusing to jump blindly onto the anti-CEO bandwagon as have so many business pundits, she stresses that executive leadership is still necessary and if effectively and ethically rendered is something which should not be hidden under the rug but promoted openly. In pursuing the cause of sound, old fashioned corporate leadership, she lays out a roadmap, based on original research, on how CEOs may repair their reputations, stressing among other things the need to communicate internally, build a management team, develop a thematic stamp and a vision.
She deserves immense praise not only for her honest appraisal of the role of CEOs in today's business environment but also for presenting an immensely practical and useful format on how to lead ethically, energetically and effectively.

Gaines-Ross' book amounts to a much needed, intellectually honest warning not to let the anti-CEO backlash go too far. Refusing to jump blindly onto the anti-CEO bandwagon as have so many business pundits, she stresses that executive leadership is still necessary and if effectively and ethically rendered is something which should not be hidden under the rug but promoted openly. In pursuing the cause of sound, old fashioned corporate leadership, she lays out a roadmap, based on original research, on how CEOs may repair their reputations, stressing among other things the need to communicate internally, build a management team, develop a thematic stamp and a vision.
She deserves immense praise not only for her honest appraisal of the role of CEOs in today's business environment but also for presenting an immensely practical and useful format on how to lead ethically, energetically and effectively.

About the Author
Lewis Grassic Gibbon (James Leslie Mitchell) was one of the finest writers of the twentieth century. Born in Aberdeenshire in 1901, he died at the age of thirty-four. He was a prolific writer of novels, short stories, essays and science fiction, and his writing reflected his wide interest in religion, archaeology, history, politics and science.

A Scottish Revelation

This is one of my favorite books. Though written by a man, it presents a woman's point of view in a harsh rural setting in Scotland at the turn of the century. Some people might find it tedious to wade through the first chapter because it presents the history of a town since the dawn of civilization: it setting, legends, and characters. I found it fascinating because it gave me the feeling, when the contemporary story began, that I had grown up in the area and knew the background on all of the characters that cross the main character's path. The main character is Chris, a young teenage woman who experiences her family's move to the countryside around Aberdeen, Scotland. Her vivid descriptions of the landscape, the people she encounters, and her family make this an uncommon story of a young woman's spirit and experience. Because Chris has experienced some education and excelled in her studies, her manner of speaking alternates between proper English and the rural dialect of the region, giving the reader a sense of what was happening throughout Scotland's countryside at the time: the intrusion of modernity into ancient rhythms and rural, isolated ways of being. Harsh, glorious, and heartbreaking, the story took me inside of Chris--her heart and mind. She is part of my memory now as though I had really known her and the contradictions of family life in rural Scotland more than 100 years ago.

Well worth the read

This is a classic of Scottish literature. The first novel is likely the most read, but the other two follow main characters through several decades of their lives. It is definitely a good read for anyone interested in the social history of Scotland's rural population in the early 20th century. The trilogy shows how all the social, political and economic factors of the times affected the poor. Too often, we only read/see how such factors affected the wealthy, e.g. the characters in Downton Abbey. So, the trilogy gives the reader a more rounded sense of what it was like to live through these times. The attempt to replicate rural dialects can be charming, but members of my book club whose first language is not English, found the language to be hard work.

The beginning of this book moves very slowly through the history of a small Scottish village. One you get through that, the story gets more and more intriguing. The characters are very well developed and the story draws you in as if you were living it. The author uses many Scottish words and phrases so I would recommend that you Google "Sunset Song glossary" before you start so that you can understand the meaning of them.
