Mostly great stuff...
By WisdomReaders
Overall I thought this book was good. It had some negatives and some positives...let me explain:

The Negative...
It was hard for me not to notice right away on the jacket of the book the list of all the things the author is involved in...kind of ironic!

There were also a couple of times Busacker said this: "Abundance creates contentment."
I fully and whole heartily disagree.
This is not a Biblical concept. Thankfulness for what God has given you creates contentment and looking to Him to find the strength to do that. (Philippians 4:11-13)

These were just a couple small statements that did seem to come out of no where and the rest of the book didn't reflect that thought, so if you keep this in mind, I would say that the rest of the book was really motivational(...almost too much at times...like you are back in High School at a pep rally. But he is a motivational life speaker, so it comes with the territory!)!!

The Positive...
One of the best parts of this book was reading a line out loud to my husband and having it really encourage and bless him,
"Then he asked, 'What do you think is the most important characteristic a leader must possess to be successful?' My honest response was 'She or he must have been broken-physically, spiritually, professionally, personally, relationally-and then gotten up, dusted themselves off, and continued forward with the wisdom from that loss seared in both mind and heart. I would never follow a leader that is unbroken. He or she lacks the compassion and humility to lead others.'...And the truth is that the seeds of consistent full engagement are forged in the moments that test us to the depth of our being. It is there that we learn what really matters and acquire the necessary humility to depend on God's great grace, rather than on our own inconsistent efforts."
Beautiful.

Some of the end of the chapter life planning exercises where kind of pointless feeling, but others were wonderful...one made me realize that this statement is what I believe God has given me passion for to be reflected in my life:

Creating simple beauty for encouragement, healing and joy for myself and others as we draw closer to Jesus.

This is reflected through my children, photography, homemaking, notes to others, etc...underneath it all lies this passion.

Even though this book is written to better understand your passions for your job and then focus your energy on that, it was easily transferable to the career of a stay-at-home-mom. It reminded me of why I want to stay at home and homeschool my children, and that the Lord has given me strengths to do just that and to not do it with a half-heart, time or attention.

This book was an easy read. Also, the book was a well made and even had an attached ribbon bookmark...I thought it was a nice touch and very cute. But I'm a girl and I really like cute things. =)

So, if you are looking for hard core theology, this might not be the book for you. If you are looking for a light read that is full of motivation for your life, this is just the book for you!

Live with Purpose
By adayriddle
In today's high speed society of doing more and getting more this book calls for some self examination of what drives us. If you feel that life is speeding by, filled with things and action - yet at night you feel unfulfilled and longing for meaning this book is the one to read.

In his book Busacker explores how we can do less in life and be more - an oxymoron in the truest since. For we are taught from birth to have a desire for more, more, more. Somehow we become engaged in a race for more things, more activities, more work, more service and yet we end the day feeling that all is lost - nothing has meaning. Though we have achieved the next promotion or pay raise, though we have acquired the cars and the house, though we serve on every committee at church we still feel driven to do more in order to find the feeling of contentment we truly long for - that feeling of having achieved.

Busacker begins the book with a thought-provoking statement: " Life worth is the investment you make into and the return you receive". This is stated after the acknowledgement that most of us live by the net worth of ourselves as the standard of achievement rather than life worth. This seems simple enough but really is quite a radical thought in today's society. The simplicity is shockingly profound - we are worth what we invest (emotionally and spiritually) in life not what we gain in materials. Our worth is in God and in living out God's will in an active, totally sold out way!

In addressing how BE more by Doing Less Busacker explores 3 major themes:
1. Awareness: living life with purpose. Knowing your worth, sharing your story, and doing what matters.

2. Alignment: How does what you have and what you do match with what you want.
I especially like this section as it calls us to be actively, totally involved in all parts of our life - having a passion to enjoy every moment and make in worthwhile.

3. Action: How do you move forward.

The over all theme is to live life with a directed purpose - to get the most out of every moment and make every moment count.

I recently read on a friends Facebook wall the following statement, "What good is it to own my own business and get everything I've ever wanted when I'm never home to enjoy any of it - or too tired when I am home".

The comments following his were a sad statement of striving for net worth instead of life worth: "One day you'll enjoy all of it", "It will be worth it when you retire", "Hard work is a great thing - you've never shied away from a challenge".

As you see the drive is more, more, more. Yet my friend made a profoundly simple statement - What good is it when I'm never home to enjoy it?

When I read this book I immediately thought of him - net worth without life worth is really worthless. He has more and does more - but in the end actually has less because he can't be fully and purposefully engaged in making the most of his life.

Gamelife: A Memoir, by Michael W. Clune

You have been awakened.

Floppy disk inserted, computer turned on, a whirring, and then this sentence, followed by a blinking cursor. So begins Suspended, the first computer game to obsess seven-year-old Michael, to worm into his head and change his sense of reality. Thirty years later he will write: "Computer games have taught me the things you can't learn from people."

Gamelife is the memoir of a childhood transformed by technology. Afternoons spent gazing at pixelated maps and mazes train Michael's eyes for the uncanny side of 1980s suburban Illinois. A game about pirates yields clues to the drama of cafeteria politics and locker-room hazing. And in the year of his parents' divorce, a spaceflight simulator opens a hole in reality.

In telling the story of his youth through seven computer games, Michael W. Clune captures the part of childhood we live alone.

Review

"Unconventionally plotted and oddly moving . . . GAMELIFE argues that our hidden inner world, 'the part of our lives that wasn't involved with people,' can save us in an outside world that doesn't always make us feel whole." ―Ethan Gilsdorf, The New York Times Book Review

“Clune’s book shows us just how intimate and intense the engagement with video games can be… The book moves in counterpoint, alternating in short subchapters between interior and exterior, life and game, letting the two halves of Clune’s experience jostle against each other in unexpected ways.” ―Gabriel Winslow-Yost, The New York Review of Books

"I never played the games Clune devotes most of his attention to, but his voice makes their obsolete rituals come alive: Sometimes he sounds like a thriller writer, sometimes an art critic, sometimes a poet." ―Christian Lorentzen, Vulture

"In the end, video games were formative for Clune simply because he played them, and he loved them, and he hasn’t forgotten the thrills that accompanied and even agitated his intellectual awakening. Arguably, it is his talent as a writer that gives his games their significance and sets them meaningfully into the sweep of his personal history." ―Simon Parkin, The New Yorker Page-Turner

"Beyond the brilliant observations that seem to pop up on every page, the scenes of Clune’s childhood make for equally compelling reading, dramatically rendered as they are in rich novelistic prose... There are more funny scenes than seems possible in a book of 200 pages." ―Christopher Urban, The Millions

“Clune’s memoirs will take over your brain, too, but in the opposite way: they will make you more human, by doubling down on your capacity for empathy, as the best literature tends to do. They will leech compassion from your center and radiate it out though your pores, where you will worry others will see it and stare. These are books you should read if you’re interested in being alive on earth. White or male or no, drug addict or no, gamer or no.” ―Ian Bogost, Los Angeles Times Review of Books

“There’s no one who writes quite like [Michael Clune]. . . .Gamelife is a spectacular accomplishment.” ―The New Republic

"Ultimately, however, the games serve as the framework with which he explores his childhood, not the other way around. The result is an unexpectedly aching exploration of growing up." ―Trevor Levin, The Harvard Crimson

"Clune’s work is an immersive tale of obsession from the virtual frontline." ―The Australian

“Many of the issues that [Gamelife] raises--the plight of the boy at the dawn of the Internet, trying to process suburbia, divorce, and alienation from would-be friends--have wider resonance. Clune never treats games as an escape but rather an entry into a heightened reality, an education, a creative stimulus, and a portal for self-discovery . . . [a] provocative book.” ―Kirkus Review

“[Gamelife] is an extremely well-written retrospective . . . [Clune] succeeds in not only sharing poignant memories but also confronting the rose-tinted glasses we tend to wear when discussing the past.” ―Lewis Parsons, Library Journal

“Along with his spot-on re-creations of childhood and adolescent conversations, Clune's wry observations about growing up in the 1970s and 1980s amid the burgeoning microcomputer revolution make his gamer memoir a standout.” ―Carl Hays, Booklist

“I highly enjoyed Gamelife-a beautiful, delightful, surreal, moving, intellectually shocking, vivid, and thrilling book about numbers and death, magic and despair, dimensions and middle school.” ―Tao Lin, author of Taipei

“I steal language and ideas from Michael W. Clune.” ―Ben Lerner, author of 10:04

“[Gamelife] feels definitive and memorable . . . Clune reminds us that we’re in a more important era than we realize, that these games are not for nerds but for explorers, that they’re not about beating the undefeated but besting yourself, seeing yourself in rhetorical fables, in binary operations with moralistic consequences. It’s Shakespearean in the same way that chess is philosophical.” ―Ben Siegel, The Buffalo News

“Michael W. Clune's Gamelife captures the wonder of being a child more durably than even the games he writes about. Gamelife is a book about the way games used to be: when demons were nothing more than a vaguely threatening cluster of blocks, and a dystopian future could play out in text alone. Inspired by the book, I downloaded an Apple IIc emulator and loaded up The Bard's Tale for the first time in twenty-five years . . . but it wasn't quite the same. I can replay and reenact by reinstalling-but I could only relive by reading this book.” ―Christian Rudder, founder of OkCupid and author of Dataclysm

“Michael W. Clune has written a brilliant and fiercely moving memoir that goes beyond mere nostalgia for the simpler days of MS-DOS. This is a book about human imagination and the ways in which it's nourished; it's about the metaphysics of role-playing, the poetics of 2-D space. Gamelife is a portrait of the artist as a young gamer, and like its predecessor, White Out, the book's ultimate power comes from its author's ability to render the mundane both terrifying and ecstatic through the kaleidoscopic filter of subjective experience.” ―Adam Wilson, author of Flatscreen and What’s Important Is Feeling

“In Gamelife, as in White Out, Clune combines banality, fear, and beauty in a way that is both original and disturbingly familiar. His memoirs read like the very best fiction.” ―Rae Armantrout, author of Just Saying

"I need to be somewhere else."
By Rich Stoehr
There were many moments with a certain dj vu feeling as I read 'Gamelife,' but this sentence was the one that got me - the need and the desire to escape into a world created in the digital guts of a Commodore 64 sounded all too familiar. That was the one that told me that someone else got me. In many ways, with a few different games and a couple different twists, this could have been my story - and, I suspect, that of many who grew up in the same time and with the same influences.

'Gamelife' is a memoir of Michael Clune, a 1980's child, told through the lens of the computer games he played along the way. From Infocom's text-based adventure Suspended to the infamously-intricate role-playing game Might and Magic II, Clune hits on some true milestone games here, and how they interact with his life resonates through each page.

Do you remember? The knee-jerk fear of Satanism that could easily make your parents take away your copy of Bard's Tale II because it has some runes on the cover? The itch to go back into the pixelated corridors of Beyond Castle Wolfenstein to bomb Hitler again, and again, and again? The primitive renderings of stars and blocky moving shapes that somehow becomes the whole wide universe on the screen of Elite? The innate understanding of the free-market system (perhaps a little too free) that was revealed in Pirates!? And through all of it, the staccato rhythm of control: WAD [space], WAD [space], WAD [space].

I remember - even though some of the games were different, I remember. For me, it was Star Raiders rather than Elite, and it was the original Bard's Tale that sucked me in, rather than its sequel. Even so, in the words of Michael Clune's 'Gamelife,' I remember.

And even more resonant, even more familiar, are the events of Clune's life, interleaved with and built upon his explorations of computer games. Along the way, friends appear and fade, schools change, puberty rears its head, families move, parents fight, and siblings squabble. And somehow, from the first tentative explorations of Suspended to the blue-sky revelations of Might and Magic II, it all fits. Clune's understanding of life, and learning, and creativity was not stifled by his love of computer games - rather, these things grew from it. His instinct of knowing when to stop playing, his sense of history, his urge to build upon the worlds growing in his imagination - all stemmed from the games he played.

Why do we play these games, people wonder. Why do we shut ourselves in a room and lose ourselves in these digital worlds? Part of me never knows how to answer this question, but Michael Clune does. In 'Gamelife' he answers them with a clear voice and a unique perspective.

We play these games because it's how we learn and how we grow. And we play them because, sometimes, for a while, we need to be somewhere else.

An immersive tale of obsession from the virtual frontline.
By Andrew McMillen
Michael W. Clune’s second memoir, 'Gamelife', explores his life between the ages of seven and 13 as he discovers computer games and swiftly becomes consumed by them. This is a fascinating book to contrast with 'Death by Video Game' by British author Simon Parkin, as Clune’s work is an immersive tale of obsession from the virtual frontline.

The narrow focus of this title seems to be quite a departure from Clune’s first memoir, 'White Out: The Secret Life of Heroin' (2013), which I have not yet read. It’s a curious stylistic decision for this middle-aged author to return to his childhood love of computers and text-based games — especially after writing about his experiences with the adult realm of illicit drugs — but it works very well.

I assume that significant creative licence has been taken with the reconstructed dialogue and scenes that Clune sets out across seven lengthy chapters — how many adults can reliably recall specific details of their early existence? — yet once this narrative conceit is accepted, 'Gamelife' is an engaging and enjoyable read. The author addresses this matter head-on early in the piece, when he writes of manually copying commands from a game manual line by line:

"No one remembers the first time they saw their mother. No one remembers the moment they first recognized that the thing in the mirror is me. But the generation of humans who were approximately seven years old when PC games first became widely available, we remember the first time we did something methodical."

The details are where this story sings, and Clune has a fine eye for the awkwardness of growing up as an unathletic child who frequently experiences social isolation. His sense of humour shines through, too: during a middle school basketball game, he writes of fantasising about taking a shot and “missing the basket by so much that the ball simply disappeared”. Later, he observes that 13 is “an awkward age. At 11 you want candy. At 15 you want beer. At 13 you want stolen candy.”

At the heart of the narrative are computer games, around which the young Clune’s life revolves. When he has access to them, he is thrilled by the seemingly infinite possibilities and challenges they offer his still-developing mind; when they are taken away from him, usually by his overbearingly religious mother he and dreams up schemes to obtain them.

The story takes a sharp, brief turn into Clune’s adult life around the halfway point, where he draws a line between an early experience with the primitive Nazi shooter Beyond Castle Wolfenstein in 1987 and his decision to invest months in playing its sequel, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, in late 2001, ostensibly while studying for a PhD. He then recounts the tale of becoming consumed by another World War II shooter, Call of Duty, in 2004, despite the warnings of his friends and professors.

“They did manage to plant an irrational fear that computer games were sucking my life dry instead of nourishing it,” he writes. “Deadening my brain instead of illuminating it. Burying facts under fiction. Life under fantasy.” Clune argues otherwise, of course; 'Gamelife' is itself an impassioned argument that playing games improved his life rather than ruining it. (He notes, however, that soon after he returned to the virtual battlefield in 2004, his girlfriend left him.)

A clear thinker and a skilled writer, Clune has thought deeply about why we play games, and he has come up with some worthy answers. “They teach us about the big things in a way nothing else can,” he writes. “They teach us about death, about character, about fate, about action and identity.” To his credit, the author shows rather than tells, and to pull these pithy quotes out of context does him something of a disservice.

Clune is concerned with much more than simply reminiscing about the part games played in his young life, however. Much of the narrative drive comes from his attempts to find and define his identity as a boy, and some of the most compelling scenes are those that describe his attempts to win and maintain friendships with a fickle collection of similarly aged boys who rarely want anything to do with games.

Set in the 1980s, the simplistic titles Clune first played — Suspended, Elite and Pirates! among them — have long since been superseded by immersive, graphics-intensive worlds, yet the details that he wrings out of his young memory are rich and illustrative.

Amazon.com Review
Renowned for its superior productions, BBC radio may have outdone itself by adapting Stephen King's Pet Sematary to audio. A clamorous cacophony of talking, whining, whistling, and howling, Pet Sematary is a quick, entertaining earful for those who don't have other auditory distractions to contend with, such as a car full of talking whining, whistling, howling children. However, the melodramatic prose marries well with the acting; such is the case when one reader--whose voice bears an uncanny resemblance to Kramer's from Seinfeld--tells another about the effects of the Pet Sematary: "Heroin makes junkies feel good when they put it in their arms, but all the time it's poisoning their mind and body--this place can be like that and don't you ever forget it!" (Running time: three hours, two cassettes)

From Library Journal
In this BBC dramatization of King's (Wizard and Glass, Audio Reviews, LJ 2/15/98) 1983 best seller, Dr. Louis Creed moves his ideal family from congested, urban Chicago to the rural simplicity of Ludlow, ME. His property sits near a long-established pet burial ground and a mysterious Indian burial ground from which the dead can be raised. The program effectively draws us into the characters' world: marriage and family, then shock, grief and madness as we explore the nature and mystery of death. Presenting a multivoiced dramatization rather than a reading of the novel, the actors work together, with added music and sound effects, to create King's macabre world. Recommended.?Kristen L. The Cat Came Back: King's Pet Sematary
By Jerome E. Murphy
This novel follows doctor Louis Creed, his wife Rachel, and their two children, who move into an old house in Maine near a haunted patch of ground that feeds on human grief and insanity, which it elicits by resurrecting any dead thing interred in its stony grip. The spirit or spirits of the place have a magnetic draw on the human mind that has led to a long, secret local tradition of this very act--mostly involving children's pets, but once in a while, something human. First the family cat gets run over, and then the family's young son. You see where this is going. When summarized, it's far-out, even laughable stuff.

Yet Stephen King was afraid to re-read the finished book, his wife afraid to finish reading it the first time, and both of them afraid to see it published. They considered it too disturbing. I can even feel a faint anxiety as I write my review. That a mere book can have such effect is as disturbing as anything else about it--it seems threatening that mere printed matter should exert such power over our nerves. King later

called it "a dirty, nasty book."

He's absolutely right. Besides being utterly merciless towards its characters and its readers, the novel contains ideas so unwholesome, so unnatural, and such a fixation on uncanny evil, that some fundamental part of us rebels. This sets up a psychological paradox, for while our brain wants to reject what has been put before us, it also wants to accept it,due to the novel's beguiling realism (another King trademark). What this means is that a thoughtful reader will end up turning over the novel's proposals in his or her brain, and if left to obsess, could wind up very disturbed indeed. There's a reason this book scared even Stephen King.

You don't become the world's bestselling novelist by chance. King fills a niche--and it's not just about horror. There is, after all, no shortage of shlocky horror novels whose plots follow storylines similar to those of King's. So what sets his work apart?

For one thing, as with the work of Dickens, God is in the details. King disarms us with evocative details from everyday life long before he asks us to believe the unbelievable. He displays a unique talent in this area, and his skill is absolutely one-in-a-million. You read certain passages and think, "Yes--it is like that, and no one else has articulated it!"

This holds true for his meditations on family life, too. "He more than half suspected that one of the things which had kept their marriage together... was their respect of the mystery--the half-grasped but never spoken idea that maybe, when you got right down... there was no such thing as marriage, no such thing as union, and that each soul stood alone and ultimately defied rationality... And sometimes (rarely, thank God) you ran into a full-fledged pocket of alien strangeness, something like the clear-air turbulence that that can buffet an airliner for no reason at all... And then you trod lightly, if you valued your marriage and your peace of mind; you tried to remember that anger at such a discovery was the province of fools who really believed it was possible for one mind to know another." It's also clear that King writes from experience when Louis meditates on the inner life of his children and wonders tenderly, musingly, and "not for the first time, if childhood was more a period of forgetting than of learning."

His work is designed to convince. Even when Louis realizes that his son has come back from the dead, he finds out in broad daylight, while on the phone with his father-in-law. It's then that he sees the mud tracks on the kitchen floor. The way this is described is utterly convincing, and by the time King's done with us, we're in Louis's shoes and we're all too sure that if this could happen, it would happen exactly the way it does here.

Another of King's disarming tactics is the pre-emptive strike. We can't laugh the horror away: his characters have already tried to do it for us. We can't rationalize it away: we watch them attempt and fail. One of King's masterstrokes in Pet Sematary is the choice of a doctor for his protagonist--someone whose clinical sense of science and reason resists every assertion of the supernatural, the uncanny, the improbable. Louis Creed does our doubting and our disbelieving for us. The passage where Louis, finally having come round, matter-of-factly calculates the various possibilities that the return of his young son might entail, as though he were working out an algebraic formula, is a subtle example of King's brand of literary achievement.

Nor can we wish away the terror by re-situating ourselves in daylight and in modernized, technological settings. Some of the most harrowing passages of the novel take place in an airport. His characters are at home in pop culture. King also has a great feel for the way that simple phrases ("It's only the loons. The sound carries. It's funny.") or even simple words like resurrection or abomination can take on uncanny meanings under the right circumstances and repeat themselves obsessively in one's mind, with cumulative ominousness. Writers will especially appreciate this effect.

Throughout Pet Sematary, but especially in the book's last third, there are passages where the narrative becomes so specific, so coldly vivid in timing and detail, as to approach hallucination. The effect this has is unsettling, to say the least. For my money, the most harrowing passages aren't those involving the resurrections, but those that put us in Louis's shoes as he robs a graveyard and then carries his dead son

through the haunted woods at two in the morning. It was these passages that kept me awake much later, because they are the most realistic. "This place was thick with spirits; it was tenebrous with them," Louis finally has to admit to himself. "The reality of what he was doing--standing out here in the dark calling his dead son--suddenly hit him and set his scalp crawling." I paraphrase, but you get the idea. There is reality in this book: the reality of marriage; of work; of parenthood; of extended family relations; of neighborhoods; of death; and of evil. As after a particularly lucid dream, there is a part of us that believes what we have just experienced. It takes a little while to recover.

Pet Sematary builds to a tense moment and leaves you there: it wants to stay with you. It could have been a modern literary classic if King didn't give in to his temptation to show us too much, simply because his talent at rendering the unbelievable believably entices him to do so. It should have retained the spare, taut, harrowing quality of the night-in-the-woods sequences, but it loses a little steam when we confront the monster.

Stephen King has been embraced as a sort of cultural campfire yarn-spinner in the popular imagination. He's given us Shawshank Redemption, Stand By Me and the Green Mile, not to mention the campily enjoyable miniseries The Stand and the scare-with-a-wink Creepshow series. What's easy to forget about is the dark bite his actual novels have, and not one of them has more bite than Pet Sematary.

the scariest book by King so far

This book frightened me the most. At one point I thought I wasn't going to finish it. That's how scary it was. I spoiled it by watching the movie first. If you have the opportunity of reading the book first DO NOT MISS IT.

World as Laboratory: Experiments with Mice, Mazes, and Men, by Rebecca Lemov

Deeply researched, World as Laboratory tells a secret history that’s not really a secret. The fruits of human engineering are all around us: advertising, polls, focus groups, the ubiquitous habit of “spin” practiced by marketers and politicians. What Rebecca Lemov cleverly traces for the first time is how the absurd, the practical, and the dangerous experiments of the human engineers of the first half of the twentieth century left their laboratories to become our day-to-day reality.

From Publishers Weekly
Lemov, a historian and anthropologist, addresses nearly a century of study into "human engineering," the idea that behavior can be modified through manipulation of the surrounding environment. The social implications of such research are important, but equally worth pondering, she suggests, is what it tells us about "the impulse for scientific experimentation" and how far scientists will go to indulge it. Some of her most intriguing passages deal with individual researchers like fear specialist O. Hobart Mowrer and sociologist John Dollard and how their theories—their career paths, even—were shaped by their emotional conditions. But Lemov balances this personal approach with close consideration of the major institutions involved, tracking the effect of grants handed out by the Rockefeller Foundation and digging into the vast archives of Yale's anthropological database (all the more remarkable for being entirely on paper). She also reports on the government's interest in the field, including the CIA's encouragement of research designed both to combat and refine psychological torture. Lemov's final charge, that "many people continue to suffer from the use of these techniques" as deployed by consumer surveys and political polls, needs substantiation, but her historical argument is both eye-opening and persuasive. From Booklist
Lemov explores the behavioral sciences during the years 1900-60, after which much of the human experimentation previously conducted acquired an odious reputation; the author remarks she was predisposed to dislike the psychologists, anthropologists, and sociologists who conducted it. Lemov improved her opinion of them, but her well-researched book nevertheless imparts a sense of uneasiness about human engineering. An outgrowth of stimulus-response experiments on animals, behavior modification of people became the goal of ambitious psychologists such as John Watson, coiner of the conditioned-response theory. Tellingly, he eventually went into advertising, while in his wake in the 1920s, foundations directed by behaviorist enthusiasts funded behavioral science centers at Yale and Harvard. With World War II, Lemov remarks, their denizens traded lab coats for uniforms, applying behavioral theories to occupied areas. A balanced account of the behaviorists' crusade, Lemov's history provides crucial backstory to contemporary practices in psychology and mass media. Gilbert Taylor

Review
“Delves into both the grotesque and the comical experiments that built the modern world…With a healthy sense of amusement and an appreciation for the absurd, Lemov recounts the attempts of the now largely defunct fields of behaviorism and behavioral engineering to quantify, predict and ultimately control human behavior…the book handles tough subjects in a deft and even charming manner.” —Seed Magazine

“Rebecca Lemov, a lecturer at the University of Washington, has produced a lively and well-researched history of the human engineering field and its broad intellectual and social legacy.” —Michael O’Donnell, The San Francisco Chronicle

“…an often enthralling history of the young science of human behavior and society.” —Scott LaFee, San Diego Union Tribune

Very interesting book and very frightening also. In fact it seems like sci-fi but it's pure and simple reality. Things that hapeened and we must now about them. Otherwise we have to accept the consequences

Book more about history of modern behavoirism than experimentation on humans
By Yoda
This book is much more about the history of modern behaviorism from the late 1800s through the early 1970s than the psychological experimentation on human beings. This is a big dissapointment considering that it is marketed as the opposite. Approxmately 180 pages of the book's 245 pages are on the history of modern behaviorism with only the remainder on the human experimentation, a topic that the book covers in a very superficial manner. For those interested in a study of modern behaviorism this may be fine but for those looking for a study of human psychological experimentation not.

5 stars for the subject matter - but only 3 for the content
By D. Hodgson
Considering the incendiary nature of the topic (social control, brainwashing, forcible interrogations, chemical coercion) the euphemistic title of this book says much about how the content is treated. Mice, mazes and men - sounds harmless, no outrage there. Yet the history of how American behaviorists extrapolating from the techniques of B.F. Skinner (who oddly receives little mention) & Joseph Mengele (whose failed sleep-coma experiments were copied in the CIA's MK-ULTRA program) receives no mention at all.

Reading along through all the chapters, the actual "what can I take with me" information is very light, although the lengthy descriptions of many of the behaviorists' personal histories are more than sufficient. For all the talk about rat maze experiments and their importance, few are actually discussed in detail and fewer still are the facts actually learned from these.

In Part Three, "Files: Out Of The Laboratory" much is made of how -large- the files on human cultures collected at Yale were, and how -exhaustively- they were cataloged - but few examples are given of the data itself, who the data-gatherers were, and what protocols these data gatherers followed in their world travels, if anything.

And what practical techniques, exactly, did the modern beneficiaries of all this Cold-War experimenting (public relations, advertising, pollsters, marketing, government, the State Department) get out all of this? Entire books have been written on the techniques of persuasion used by each of these groups yet in "World As Laboratory" the reader walks away with very little in terms of concrete, practical modern-day examples.

The "thriller" part of the book, of course is Chapter 10's "The Impossible Experiment" documenting the CIA's brainwashing and drug experiments which rank among the most putrid of shames ever perpitrated upon American citizens by their own government. Yet, while related subjects such as Stanley Milgram's experiments are given great coverage, the equally important (and horrifying) Stanford Prison experiments are glossed over in just a couple paragraphs.

If you're wondering how Rebecca wraps this all up in her Conclusions, one need only refer to title of the book again - ultimately, the author is sympathetic, and even slightly admiring, of the scientific amoralists portrayed in the book. And although she tries to reassure the reader that attempts to create a Manchurian Candidate were unreliable and inconsistent at best, one can't help but feel that Rebecca is (mildly) rooting for the wrong team.

Mechanical clocks are now considered works or art, a part of history, a part of the family and they also need love.
Sooner or later, your treasured time piece will stop. Your choice is to either live with it in silence or go to a hard to find repair shop, leave it for weeks and pay perhaps hundreds of dollars to get it back, hopefully working.
Fact is, you can more than likely do the same thing they do, by yourself. There are little known items that stop a clock that you can easily do yourself for little or no money. You can even oil your clock for just a few dollars worth of oil.
You can service: Grandfather Clocks, Mantel Clocks, Wall Clocks, Kitchen Clocks, French Clocks, Cuckoo Clocks, etc. No special tools needed besides oil which I will tell you where to buy very inexpensively.
I will teach you how to service your own clock.
